In a powerful appeal evoking the spirit of India’s freedom struggle, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday urged citizens to actively promote and adopt swadeshi (indigenous) products.
Drawing a direct line between economic decisions and national security, the CM warned that spending on foreign-made goods could indirectly fuel terrorism, religious conversions, and attempts to destabilise the country’s economy.
Speaking at a public event in Aligarh, a city fast emerging as a manufacturing and innovation hub, Adityanath made a strong case for reviving the ethos of the Swadeshi Movement — a cornerstone of India’s fight for independence led by Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and other stalwarts.
That historic movement was not just a boycott of British goods; it was a rallying cry for economic self-sufficiency, self-respect, and national unity.
Today, the Chief Minister believes the same spirit must guide India’s progress in the 21st century. Adopting Swadeshi is not just a matter of the economy; it is about safeguarding our national interest. When we purchase locally made products, the money stays with our artisans and craftsmen.
This strengthens rural economies, boosts per capita income, and empowers the lowest strata of society,” Adityanath said. But when our hard-earned money flows to foreign companies, we have no control over where it ends up.
That same money could be used to finance terrorism, fund religious conversions, and sow seeds of unrest to destabilise our society.”
The Chief Minister’s remarks come in the broader context of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, which aims to rekindle national pride in homegrown goods and reduce dependence on imported products, especially from economic rivals.
Yogi Adityanath also appealed to citizens to embrace local products during festivals by gifting indigenous items to family and friends. “Let festivals be an opportunity to celebrate our culture and support our economy,” he emphasised.
Boosting Development and Defence: Aligarh on the Rise
During his Aligarh visit, the Chief Minister also unveiled development projects worth over ₹957 crore, marking a significant investment in local infrastructure and public welfare. Key projects include:
- A comprehensive drinking water restructuring scheme
- A new forensic science laboratory
- A government degree college in Atrauli
- A 900-kiloliter water reservoir
- Widening and beautification of the Atrauli–Railway Station road
He hailed Aligarh as a rising star in India’s industrial map, especially for its growing significance in drone technology and hardware manufacturing, both of which are generating jobs and attracting investment.
The CM lauded the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor, launched in 2018, as a symbol of India’s military self-reliance. Highlighting cutting-edge indigenous advancements, he proudly noted that India is now producing world-class weapons such as the BrahMos missile, right here in UP.
What we saw during Operation Sindoor is proof of what Indian-made weapons can achieve. Our defence sector is no longer dependent on imports. We are not just self-sufficient — we are leading,” he said.
Yogi Adityanath’s message resonates deeply in today’s global landscape, where economic choices are tightly woven with national identity, sovereignty, and security. Reviving the swadeshi mindset is not just about supporting local businesses — it’s about building a stronger, safer, and more self-reliant India.
