Yogi Adityanath Expands Healthcare Access in Uttar Pradesh, But Questions Remain Over Delivery and Quality

Gorakhpur – Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the new 250-bed multi-super-speciality Regency Hospital in Gorakhpur, asserting that his government has worked relentlessly to ensure that advanced medical care, once a luxury for the rich, is now accessible to the poor through schemes such as Ayushman Bharat and the CM Jan Arogya Yojana.

Speaking at the event in Jangiya Bazar, the chief minister said that funds for treatment are no longer a constraint, citing disbursement of ₹1,100 crore from the CM Relief Fund in just the past year.

He emphasized that healthcare in eastern Uttar Pradesh has undergone a major transformation, with AIIMS Gorakhpur, new medical colleges, and super-speciality centres at BHU adding capacity to a region that once depended almost entirely on the overstretched BRD Medical College.

Expanding Reach of Super-Speciality Care

The newly inaugurated Regency Hospital boasts 80 ICU beds, eight modular operating theatres, and the region’s first dedicated cardiac care unit equipped with an advanced Cath Lab and 24/7 bypass surgeons.

The facility promises to make life-saving cardiac surgeries and other critical treatments accessible locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to Lucknow or Delhi. Hospital chairman Dr Atul Kapoor said the goal was to bring “world-class healthcare to Purvanchal” while also generating nearly 900 jobs.

A Reality Check for the Common Man

Yet, while infrastructure has undeniably expanded under Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, the real question remains: will the common citizen truly benefit from these facilities?

Uttar Pradesh’s sheer size, deeply entrenched bureaucracy, and the influence of middlemen often create hurdles for patients.

Many families still complain of having to grease palms or navigate complex layers of officials before receiving the benefits of government-funded treatment schemes.

Furthermore, a section of the medical fraternity has faced criticism for its indifference toward economically weaker patients. Despite Ayushman Bharat cards and relief funds, allegations persist that deserving beneficiaries are sometimes turned away or charged extra.

Quality Under Scrutiny

Experts point out that building hospitals is only one part of the challenge. Ensuring the quality of treatment, transparent governance, and accountability of doctors and administrators remains the greater test.

For Yogi Adityanath, whose government has invested heavily in expanding healthcare facilities, the task ahead is to curb corruption, eliminate the role of middlemen, and guarantee that advanced medical services reach the poorest without discrimination.

As Uttar Pradesh takes pride in its growing network of medical institutions, it remains to be seen whether the delivery system will match the intent—or whether ordinary people will continue to struggle to access what is promised on paper.
