A young man from Piparahata village under Kaundhiyara police station in Prayagraj ended his life by jumping into the Tons River on Wednesday morning, allegedly after being pressured into an immediate marriage and facing a police complaint threat.
The incident has plunged the family into mourning. With the help of divers, police recovered the body from the river.
The Tons River, in which Shaeshmani jumped to his death
A case has been registered against the girl and her family members, who have been detained for questioning.
Sheshmani Yadav (21), also known as Rajat, was the youngest among five siblings and worked at a dairy.
He was the son of Dashrath Yadav, a resident of Piparahata under Koundhiyara police station limits.
Sheshmani had been in a relationship with a girl from the same village.
According to allegations, on November 1, the girl left her home and arrived at Sheshmani’s house, insisting on getting married immediately.
Her family allegedly threatened to file a police complaint if the couple did not get married in a court or temple within an hour.
However, Sheshmani reportedly wanted a proper, traditional wedding ceremony.
When he learned on Tuesday evening that a formal complaint had been filed at the police station, Sheshmani became extremely distressed.
The next morning, around 8 am, he went to the Tons River with his friend Deepak. In a sudden act, he jumped into the river.
Boatmen raised an alarm, but he drowned before help could reach him. His grief-stricken family rushed to the spot.
After about five and a half hours of searching, police recovered the body around 1:30 pm with the help of local boatmen.
The family initially refused a post-mortem, but later agreed after persuasion by the police.
Following a complaint filed by Sheshmani’s family, police have registered a case against the girl, her father, maternal uncle, and brother for allegedly demanding ₹15 lakh and abetting the suicide. They have been taken into custody for questioning.
Viral audio and video spark blame game
After Sheshmani’s death, both families began levelling accusations against each other.
Videos and audio clips of conversations between the girl’s family and Sheshmani, as well as an audio clip of the girl, have surfaced on social media.
In one video, the girl’s family can allegedly be heard threatening to file an FIR if the marriage does not happen immediately.
In an audio clip, the girl can reportedly be heard asking Sheshmani to call her home for marriage and then changing her stand.
Sheshmani’s family has also accused the girl’s family of demanding ₹5 lakh initially and later ₹15 lakh to settle the matter.
