Zelenskyy and PM Modi Hold Detailed Talks on Ukraine War, Peace Efforts, and Bilateral Ties

In a significant diplomatic exchange, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a long and detailed phone conversation on Monday, covering the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, possible pathways to peace, and the strengthening of India–Ukraine bilateral relations.

Both leaders later shared highlights of the discussion on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Zelenskyy described the conversation as comprehensive, noting that they touched upon “all important issues” in their cooperation and the broader diplomatic landscape.

He expressed gratitude to PM Modi for his “warm words of support” towards the people of Ukraine, calling the dialogue constructive and timely.

The Ukrainian President briefed Modi on the latest wave of Russian offensives, citing in particular a deadly attack the previous day on a bus station in Zaporizhzhia, which left dozens injured. He labelled the strike a “deliberate bombing of a regular urban facility” and accused Russia of showing no inclination towards a ceasefire.

“Instead of demonstrating readiness for peace, Russia is only proving its determination to continue occupation and killings,” Zelenskyy said, adding that any resolution to the crisis must involve Ukraine directly in the negotiations.

“Other formats will not deliver results,” he stressed, underscoring Kyiv’s firm opposition to any talks that exclude Ukrainian participation.

The Ukrainian leader also raised the issue of international sanctions, emphasising the need to curb the export of Russian energy — especially oil — as a means to weaken Moscow’s ability to finance its military campaign.

On his part, PM Modi said he welcomed the opportunity to hear Zelenskyy’s perspectives on “recent developments” in the conflict. Reiterating India’s consistent position,

Modi called for an early and peaceful resolution, affirming that New Delhi remains committed to contributing “in every possible way” to peace efforts. He also highlighted India’s interest in expanding bilateral cooperation with Ukraine beyond the conflict.

The conversation concluded with both leaders agreeing to meet in person on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September in New York. They also discussed organising reciprocal visits to further deepen diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

With India’s growing stature on the global stage and Ukraine’s urgent push for international support, the Modi–Zelenskyy dialogue adds another layer to ongoing global diplomatic manoeuvres surrounding the war.
