In a landmark initiative to promote spiritual tourism and commemorate significant sites from the Ramayana, the Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct a new religious and cultural corridor named ‘Bharat Path’.

This extensive infrastructure project is intended to provide improved access to Bharatkund, a revered pilgrimage site deeply associated with Lord Ram’s younger brother, Bharat.

The project, which will be executed at an estimated cost of ₹900 crore, has been proposed by the Public Works Department (PWD) of the state and is currently awaiting final approval from the state administration.

A detailed project report (DPR) outlining the scale, design, and objectives of Bharat Path has already been submitted, according to Executive Engineer S.P. Bharti from the PWD’s Provincial Section.

Enhancing Pilgrimage Infrastructure Post-Ram Temple Inauguration

The announcement of Bharat Path follows the tremendous increase in footfall to Ayodhya, especially after the construction and ceremonial inauguration of the grand Ram Temple.

The temple has quickly become one of the most prominent pilgrimage destinations in India, attracting lakhs of devotees each day, including international tourists who wish to witness the birthplace of Lord Ram.

To accommodate this surge in visitors and ensure smooth transportation and logistics, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has launched multiple large-scale infrastructure upgrades in the region.

These include projects such as Ram Path, Bhakti Path, Janmabhoomi Path, and ongoing efforts to widen ancient pilgrimage circuits like the Panchkosi and Chaudahkosi Parikrama routes.

Bharat Path: Route Design and Strategic Importance

The proposed Bharat Path corridor will span approximately 20 kilometers, starting from the Ranopali railway crossing along the existing Ram Path and stretching up to Bharatkund, passing through key spiritual and residential areas like Vidyakund and Darshan Nagar along the Prayagraj Highway.

Presently, this stretch consists of a two-lane road, which will undergo significant transformation under the new plan. The upgraded design includes:

  • Two 9-metre-wide lanes, one on each side for seamless traffic flow
  • A 2.5-metre-wide central divider for enhanced road safety
  • Beautification and signage inspired by Ram Path to provide a holistic spiritual experience
  • Additional pedestrian zones, lighting, and landscaping features to support large gatherings and rituals

This development is expected to greatly enhance the accessibility and safety of the route, especially during festivals, religious yatras, and peak pilgrimage seasons.

Spiritual and Mythological Significance of Bharatkund

Bharatkund is a spiritually significant site believed to be the location where Bharat, the younger brother of Lord Ram, engaged in intense penance for 14 years during Ram’s exile, as described in the ancient Hindu epic, the Ramayana.

The place is also thought to be the site where Bharat performed the ‘Pind Daan’ ritual in memory of his father, King Dasharatha, following Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya.

Adding to its mythological prominence, Bharatkund is home to a sacred lake mentioned in traditional scriptures. The lake is a major attraction for pilgrims from eastern Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj, and other nearby regions who seek to perform religious rites and pay homage to their ancestors and deities.

An Effort to Promote Devotional Tourism and Economic Growth

Officials believe that the development of Bharat Path will not only improve logistical ease for pilgrims but also contribute significantly to the economic development of Ayodhya and surrounding regions by boosting devotional tourism, hospitality services, and small businesses that cater to pilgrims.

SP Bharti, the Executive Engineer overseeing the initiative, expressed optimism about the timely commencement of the project. “The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Bharat Path has already been submitted to our headquarters for approval. Once we receive the green signal, work will begin in full swing,” he said.

A Vision for a Modern Spiritual Corridor

Much like Ram Path, which has already become an iconic spiritual avenue leading to the Ram Temple, Bharat Path is envisioned as a modern yet spiritually immersive roadway, complete with symbolic elements, cultural motifs, and practical features designed to enhance the experience of every devotee making the sacred journey.

As Uttar Pradesh continues its transformation into a hub for religious tourism, projects like Bharat Path symbolize the blending of mythological reverence with modern infrastructure, ushering in a new era for sacred sites and cultural heritage in the state.
