In a recent development in the tragic case involving the suicide of Manav Sharma, a senior recruitment manager at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Agra, two of the accused individuals currently lodged in jail have filed for bail before the Allahabad High Court.

The bail applications were submitted by Poonam Sharma, the mother-in-law of the deceased, and one of her daughters, who is also Manav’s sister-in-law.

The applications have been moved through their legal counsel, seeking relief from judicial custody, where they have been lodged since their arrest in connection with the case.

The case against them was initiated by Manav’s father, Narendra Kumar Sharma, who filed a formal complaint under Section 108 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to abetment of suicide.

The FIR, lodged on February 28, 2025, at Sadar Bazar police station in Agra, named Manav’s wife, Nikita Sharma, his father-in-law, Nripendra Kumar Sharma, his mother-in-law, Poonam Sharma, and his two sisters-in-law as co-accused.

According to the FIR, all five individuals were implicated in allegedly mentally harassing Manav to such an extent that he took the extreme step of ending his life.

The suicide occurred on the morning of February 24, 2025, when Manav was found hanging in his residence located in Agra’s Defence Colony, a well-known neighborhood in the city.

Before committing suicide, Manav reportedly recorded a video message on his mobile phone, in which he explicitly blamed his wife Nikita and her family members for the emotional torment and pressure that allegedly drove him to take such a drastic step.

This video surfaced as a critical piece of evidence in the case and formed the basis of the investigation and subsequent arrests.

All the accused, including Manav’s wife, have been taken into custody and are presently in jail. The legal proceedings in the case have been steadily progressing over the past few weeks.

Last week, the Agra police submitted a comprehensive chargesheet against all five accused before the district court. The chargesheet includes testimonies from a total of 17 witnesses, along with detailed statements from the victim’s immediate family — his father, mother, and sister — who have supported the allegations and reinforced claims of prolonged harassment that Manav allegedly faced.

The matter was scheduled for a hearing today in the Allahabad High Court. However, due to an overload of cases and limited time, the hearing could not take place.

The bail pleas are now expected to be listed again for a hearing in the coming week.

The suicide of Manav Sharma has sparked significant attention in Agra and beyond, especially due to his professional background with a leading IT firm and the distressing nature of the allegations.

As the judicial process continues, the court is expected to carefully examine the evidence, witness statements, and the claims made in the bail petitions before making any determinations.

The case continues to be under public and legal scrutiny, with both sides preparing for what is likely to be a protracted legal battle.
