In a bid to increase conviction rate in criminal cases and ensure speedy justice, the central government has decided to set up Forensic Science Universities in all states and territories.
This step is being taken in order to boost conviction rate on the basis of scientific evidence.
The union cabinet following deliberations decided to increase and upgrade national forensic infrastructure.
This plan is going to start in 2024-2025 and would be fully operational from 2028-29.
Universities will be equipped with a campus. The plan also includes setting up of national forensic laboratories also. The Delhi based campus of National forensic science University will also be modernised and upgraded.
The plan includes capacity of training to 9000 students per year.
The home ministry will cater to the budget of these campuses in the country.
The country is going to implement three new criminal laws from July this year. These universities are expected to play pivotal role in the implementation of these laws.
