As for the two countries, the relationship between India and Russia (formerly the Soviet Union) dates back to the 1950s when India was one of the first countries to recognize the USSR. India pursued a policy of non-alignment during the Cold War, but maintained close ties with the Soviet Union.

The Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1971 marked the high point of the India-Soviet relationship. The treaty provided a framework for extensive cooperation in the political, economic, scientific, cultural and military spheres.

The Soviet Union was a major arms supplier to India and provided critical support during the 1971 India-Pakistan war that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The Soviets also vetoed Western resolutions against India at the UN Security Council.

Economic cooperation between India and the USSR also grew rapidly, with the USSR providing aid and funding major industrial projects in India through the 1970s and 80s.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, India’s relations with the new Russian Federation continued to be close, though the nature of the relationship evolved. Military-technical cooperation and energy partnerships became increasingly important.

In the post-Cold War period, India and Russia have maintained a “special and privileged strategic partnership” encompassing politics, security, defense, civil nuclear energy and other areas. Russia remains one of India’s closest international partners

Recent years have seen further strengthening of India-Russia ties, with high-level summits, growing economic links and continued defense cooperation. Both countries have sought to coordinate their positions on major global issues as well.
