Prime Minister Narendra Modi Visits Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Offers Prayers at the Triveni Sangam
On a spiritually significant day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, immersing himself in the sacred atmosphere of one of the world’s largest spiritual gatherings. The Mahakumbh, a once-in-12-years event, commenced on January 13, coinciding with Paush Purnima, and will continue until Mahashivratri on February 26, drawing millions of devotees and tourists from across the globe.
Upon arriving in Prayagraj, the Prime Minister, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, took a boat ride on the Yamuna River to reach the revered Triveni Sangam. This confluence of three rivers—the holy Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati—is a site of immense religious and cultural significance, attracting pilgrims who seek spiritual cleansing and blessings.
Dressed in a saffron jacket and blue track pants, the Prime Minister participated in various rituals with utmost devotion. Holding rudraksha beads in his hands and chanting mantras, he performed a sacred dip in the Triveni Sangam. Standing in the holy waters, he offered prayers to the rivers, creating a spiritually charged moment that resonated deeply with the gathered devotees.
After completing his ritual bath, PM Modi participated in an ‘aarti’ ceremony conducted on a specially designed floating platform in the middle of the river. In another heartfelt gesture of reverence, the Prime Minister, later seen wearing a black jacket and a Himachali cap, offered milk and flowers to the holy rivers as part of the traditional puja rituals.
Sharing his experience, PM Modi took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, expressing his feelings about the spiritual journey. “Today, I got the great fortune of performing Puja-Archana after bathing in the holy Sangam at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh. I got immense peace and satisfaction from the blessings of Maa Ganga. I prayed to her for the happiness, prosperity, health, and well-being of all the countrymen. Har-Har Gange!” the Prime Minister wrote, encapsulating his profound connection with the sacred event.
The Mahakumbh Mela, an event steeped in history and tradition, is recognized as the largest spiritual and cultural congregation in the world. The current edition has already drawn over 38 crore pilgrims from all corners of India and abroad, according to the Uttar Pradesh government. The festival holds immense religious importance, as devotees believe that a dip in the Triveni Sangam during the Mahakumbh washes away sins and leads to spiritual liberation.
The Uttar Pradesh government has made extensive arrangements to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims. Special facilities have been introduced for senior citizens, with the state’s social welfare department assisting in the bathing of 2,000 elderly individuals.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Prayagraj also highlighted significant developmental strides in the region. During his earlier visit on December 13, he inaugurated 167 development projects worth ₹5,500 crore. These initiatives aim to improve connectivity, public amenities, and overall services, thereby ensuring a better experience for residents and visitors attending the Mahakumbh.
Adding to the grandeur of the Mahakumbh, Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck participated in spiritual activities during his visit to Prayagraj. The King visited the ‘Digital Mahakumbh Experience Centre,’ an initiative that blends tradition with modernity, offering a unique digital perspective on the Mahakumbh-2025. Sharing his thoughts on the King’s visit, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath posted on X, “His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck Ji of Bhutan today visited the ‘Digital Mahakumbh Experience Centre’ in Prayagraj, the holy symbol of spirituality and modernity, Mahakumbh-2025, and observed the divine, grand, and digital form of Mahakumbh.”
The Mahakumbh Mela continues to stand as a testament to India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. With its blend of traditional rituals, digital innovation, and large-scale infrastructure improvements, the festival not only celebrates faith but also showcases the country’s ability to host such an awe-inspiring global event.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Mahakumbh has further amplified the event’s significance, serving as a reminder of the deep-rooted spiritual and cultural connections that unite the people of India. As millions of devotees continue to flock to the Triveni Sangam, the Mahakumbh remains a shining example of faith, devotion, and the timeless appeal of Indian traditions.
