Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the legacy of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, stating that the BJP-led “double-engine” administration has undertaken significant initiatives to honor the architect of the Indian Constitution. Among these initiatives, he announced that all upcoming hostels for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students across the state would be named after Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

During a Budget discussion in the UP Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday, Adityanath criticized the opposition for failing to recognize and honor Ambedkar and other Dalit and backward leaders. He accused them of paying mere lip service to the Constitution while not taking concrete steps to uphold the rights of marginalized communities.

“Our government has initiated several historic projects, including the construction of the Ambedkar International Centre and the establishment of ‘Panch Teerth’ in his memory. Furthermore, every district in the state will have hostels for SC and ST students named after Baba Saheb Ambedkar,” he stated, emphasizing that this year marks the ‘Amrit Mahotsav’ of the Indian Constitution.

Lashing out at the Samajwadi Party (SP), he pointed out that despite multiple opportunities to govern, they never took meaningful steps to establish institutions in Ambedkar’s name. Instead, he alleged, they removed existing ones.

Highlighting the BJP government’s efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Adityanath mentioned the construction of the ‘Panch Teerth’ and the upcoming Ambedkar International Memorial and Cultural Center in Lucknow, which will also offer scholarships to Dalit students.

In a sharp attack on the opposition, he stated that the SP engaged only in political sloganeering, while the BJP government has taken tangible measures to honor great leaders. As an example, he cited the establishment of a hostel named after Savitribai Phule at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow for Dalit students.

He also reminded the house that the Samajwadi government had removed Ambedkar’s name from the Kannauj Medical College, a decision that the BJP government later reversed.

Discussing the development of historical sites, Adityanath stated, “In Prayagraj, we have built a grand corridor at Nishadraj Shringverpur, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi. The Samajwadi Party attempted to encroach upon this historic site, but we have preserved and developed it as part of our heritage.” He further accused the SP of trying to obstruct the construction of Maharaja Suheldev’s victory memorial, which the BJP government has now completed in Bahraich and Shravasti.

He also highlighted the transformation of Sant Ravidas’ birthplace in Varanasi, stating, “They tried to hinder the development at his birthplace, but we have built a grand statue and corridor in his honor.” He criticized the opposition for blocking the development of important historical sites such as Maharishi Valmiki’s meditation site in Lalpur, which the BJP government has since developed into a model tourist destination.

Similarly, he claimed that the opposition had neglected Rajapur, the birthplace of Goswami Tulsidas, whereas the BJP government has carried out extensive development work there.

Adityanath also praised Prime Minister Modi for declaring November 26 as Constitution Day as a tribute to Dr. Ambedkar.

Announcing new welfare measures, the Chief Minister stated, “On the 300th birth anniversary of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar, we are planning to establish seven hostels exclusively for women.” He further announced the creation of 100-acre employment zones in every district to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Focusing on tribal heritage, Adityanath noted that the government has already built a tribal museum in Imlia Kodar and Balrampur in honor of Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary. Similar museums are under construction in Mirzapur and Sonbhadra. Additionally, a digital library will be set up in every municipal body to commemorate the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which, according to him, will serve as a center of knowledge dedicated to Vajpayee’s legacy.

Criticizing the previous Samajwadi Party government, Adityanath accused them of neglecting the welfare of the poor. He claimed that the opposition did not even allow the construction of houses for underprivileged families. “During their tenure, the number of houses built was negligible, whereas under the BJP government, over 56 lakh houses have been constructed,” he stated. He further alleged that the SP was troubled by the government’s efforts to build toilets and homes for the poor, as they were more focused on family-centered politics.

Concluding his speech, the Chief Minister emphasized that this Budget reflects Uttar Pradesh’s rich heritage and commitment to social justice. He assured that the BJP government would continue to honor great leaders and drive the state towards new heights of progress and development.
