Fake-Raid at Karol Bagh Jewellery Shop: 1 kg Gold Looted, Five Arrested After 1,200-km Interstate Chase

Last month, a daring gang struck at a jewellery workshop in the Dev Nagar area of Karol Bagh, New Delhi. On November 27, five men — posing as officers of Delhi Police and the Income Tax Department — stormed the shop, seized workers’ phones, dismantled the CCTV system and made off with approximately 1.001 kg of gold, worth around ₹70 lakh, before fleeing.

What followed was a massive three-day manhunt by the Delhi Police. The central district’s Special Staff from Prasad Nagar Police Station launched a probe, examining more than 250 CCTV cameras across Delhi and Haryana.

On Saturday, police announced the arrest of five men — identified as Sandeep (30), Rakesh Sharma (41), Shaminder Pal Singh (43), Lavpreet Singh (30), and Parvinder (42) — after a gruelling 1,200-kilometre chase that spanned Delhi and parts of Haryana.

Investigators say the gang was inspired by the Bollywood film Special 26, in which con men impersonate income-tax officers to loot unsuspecting victims.

While one man donned a fake police uniform to lend credibility, the others posed as Income Tax officials — together they executed a “raid” that appeared official enough to prevent resistance.

From the accused, police recovered 435.03 grams of the stolen gold — plus ₹3.97 lakh in cash, three vehicles used in the crime (a Brezza, a Toyota Urban Cruiser, and a Swift Dzire), as well as five fake Delhi Police ID card holders and the clothes worn during the raid.

Police officials have described the arrests as a major success, achieved through intensive CCTV analysis, technical tracking and coordinated raids across multiple districts.

Experts say the case underscores both the elaborate planning behind such fake raids and the seriousness with which law enforcement now treats them.

With three more suspects still at large — and efforts on to recover the remaining gold — investigators say the probe continues.
