At the recent launch of Narkatla Swarg, the latest book penned by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut in Mumbai, legendary poet, lyricist, and screenwriter Javed Akhtar once again showcased his hallmark candor and fearlessness.

Speaking before a distinguished audience, Akhtar delved into the complex and often hostile reactions he has received over the years due to his outspoken views on socio-political matters.

With his usual clarity and sharp wit, Akhtar highlighted the backlash he has endured from both Hindu and Muslim hardliners, making it clear that his criticism and public commentary have never been selective. “I have been abused from both sides,” he said. “It’s not as though only one group targets me.

I would be deeply ungrateful if I didn’t acknowledge the fact that many people across communities also support, appreciate, and encourage me. But yes, the truth is, the extremists from this side abuse me, and the extremists from that side abuse me. This is my reality.”

Caught Between Extremes

He went on to explain the contradictions he constantly faces, particularly due to his secular and rationalist stance. “One group calls me a kaafir and says I’ll burn in hell,” he said, referring to Islamic extremists who see him as too liberal or critical of religious orthodoxy.

“The other side calls me a jihadi and demands I go to Pakistan,” he added, referencing the right-wing Hindu fundamentalists who misinterpret his calls for communal harmony and dialogue as being unpatriotic.

Then, with his trademark sarcasm and eloquence, Akhtar concluded, “If I have to choose between hell and Pakistan, I would much rather choose hell.”

Comments Amid Escalating Tensions

Akhtar’s comments come at a sensitive time when tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply. His statements were made in the wake of Operation Sindoor, India’s recent strategic missile strike aimed at dismantling terror camps across the border.

This military action was carried out as a response to a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed numerous lives and shocked the nation.

Akhtar did not hold back in addressing the broader issue of national security and the need for strong political leadership in the face of repeated cross-border aggression.

In a separate statement reported by the news agency ANI, the veteran writer-activist urged the Indian government to act decisively.

“This has not happened just once—it’s been repeated many times,” he said firmly. “A few ceremonial cracker bursts at the border are not enough anymore. It’s time for real, impactful steps.

The government must act in a way that even the most delusional leaders in Pakistan, including their Army chief, are forced to think twice before making provocative speeches.”

A Voice in Parliament and Beyond

Javed Akhtar has long been a towering figure not just in Indian arts and culture but also in public discourse and parliamentary debate. From March 22, 2010, to March 21, 2016, he served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of India’s Parliament.

He was appointed to this prestigious role by then-President Pratibha Patil, recognizing his contributions to literature, music, and national dialogue.

During his tenure, Akhtar frequently raised issues of social justice, gender equality, minority rights, and freedom of expression, cementing his status as a fearless advocate of democratic values.

An Unflinching Voice of Conscience

In an increasingly polarized environment, Javed Akhtar remains one of the few public intellectuals willing to take on both religious fundamentalism and political extremism, regardless of where it comes from.

His fearless stand on sensitive issues—whether it concerns communalism, terrorism, or the need for peace and reason—has earned him both admiration and animosity. Yet, he continues to speak his mind, undeterred by the personal attacks or ideological opposition.

As the event in Mumbai proved once again, Akhtar’s voice continues to resonate deeply with those who believe in the power of truth, courage, and nuanced thinking—qualities that are becoming increasingly rare in public discourse.
