The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India announced on Friday that Russia has communicated to India the status of Indian nationals who were serving in the Russian armed forces. According to the MEA, 16 Indians who were part of the Russian military have been reported as missing, and 12 others have lost their lives while in service.

Providing further details, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed that there have been a total of 126 documented cases of Indian nationals serving in the Russian military. Out of these, 96 individuals have returned to India after being discharged from the Russian armed forces.

“Among the remaining Indian nationals, 18 are still serving in the Russian military. However, the whereabouts of 16 of these individuals are currently unknown,” Jaiswal stated. He added, “The Russian authorities have classified these 16 individuals as missing, and we are actively working to obtain further clarity on their status.”

The MEA emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian nationals abroad. “We are in constant communication with the Russian side to expedite the release and repatriation of those who are still in service, as well as to seek further information about the missing individuals,” Jaiswal said.

This situation highlights the challenges faced by Indian nationals serving in foreign armed forces. The MEA’s efforts are focused on addressing the concerns of the families of the affected individuals and bringing resolution to this matter as quickly as possible.

The loss of 12 Indian lives while serving in the Russian military underscores the gravity of the situation. Families and authorities in India are seeking answers and resolution for those who remain unaccounted for. The MEA is urging Russian authorities to provide all necessary assistance and information to resolve these issues promptly.

As efforts continue, the Indian government remains dedicated to the safe return of its citizens and to ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the missing individuals are thoroughly investigated. The priority remains on fostering collaboration with Russian officials to bring closure to the affected families.
