Splashdown After Historic Ride in Space
Aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, nicknamed Grace, Shukla and his fellow astronauts—Peggy Whitson of the U.S., Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland, and Tibor Kapu of Hungary—parachuted safely into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California at 2:30 a.m. PDT.
The capsule’s dramatic descent capped a 22-hour reentry that saw it blaze through Earth’s atmosphere, with temperatures reaching a scorching 1,927°C (3,500°F) on the exterior.
Thanks to advanced thermal shielding and regulated flight suits, the astronauts remained safe and cool throughout reentry. Infrared cameras captured the parachutes unfurling in the darkness, gradually slowing the capsule to a gentle 15 mph (24 kph) before splashdown.
