SP MP Ram ji Lal Suman seeks police protection from court after attack on his house

Samajwadi Party’s Rajya Sabha member of parliament (MP) Ram Ji Lal Suman has filed a writ petition before the Allahabad High Court seeking security, given the attack on his house following a remark made by him in parliament on the medieval period’s historical figure and Rajput king Rana Sanga.
In his petition, the MP has also sought an impartial probe into the alleged attack by Karni Sena on his house at Agra and also action against the members of Karni Sena who were involved in this attack.
The petition is likely to be taken up by the court soon.
The controversy began when Ramji Lal Suman made a statement in Parliament on March 21, suggesting that Rana Sanga had invited Mughal emperor Babur to India to defeat Ibrahim Lodi.
He further argued that if Indian Muslims are labelled as Babur’s descendants, then by the same logic, other communities could also be seen as descendants of a “traitor” like Rana Sanga.
These remarks, which questioned the Rajput legacy, provoked an immediate backlash from Rajput organizations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha and the Karni Sena.
Subsequently, the members of Karni Sena attacked and vandalised the residence of Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman in Agra on March 26 over his statement on Rajput ruler Rana Sanga in Parliament.
Thereafter, Randheer Suman, ex-MLA and son of Ram Ji Lal Suman lodged an FIR at police station Hariparwat of Agra district against the unknown mob.
The petitioner MP has alleged that Karni Sena has demanded apology from him on this remark on Rana Sanga and has also threatened that if the apology is not tendered, then a similar demonstration will be made again on April 12.
According to the petitioner, in view of the said threat, he has requested the government to provide him adequate security.
He said that in this backdrop, a letter seeking security was also sent to India’s President, Vice-President, and Union Home Minister. However, when no security was provided, he filed the present writ petition before the high court.
