Lucknow:
In a significant move aimed at promoting sustainable mobility and accelerating industrial growth, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has unveiled a comprehensive plan to transform the city of Kanpur into a major hub for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing.
The ambitious initiative is expected to attract an investment of approximately ₹700 crore and is being undertaken as a central component of the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision – 2030.
As per an official statement released by the state administration, the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) will be leading the development of a large-scale, cutting-edge EV manufacturing park. This high-tech industrial zone will span over 500 acres of land near Bhimsen, an area located along the strategically important Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC).
The corridor offers enhanced connectivity for industrial logistics and is anticipated to give a substantial advantage to industries operating in the area by facilitating faster and more efficient transportation of goods.
The EV park will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, which aims to combine government infrastructure support with private sector innovation and investment.
This approach is expected to ensure both financial viability and long-term sustainability of the project. According to government officials, the development of this park is poised to position Kanpur as a key contributor to India’s expanding electric mobility ecosystem, which is currently witnessing rapid growth due to both environmental concerns and government policy incentives.
The primary objective of the proposed EV park is to strengthen the domestic EV supply chain and to encourage indigenous manufacturing, thereby reducing India’s dependence on imports for essential components.
The park will serve as a hub for the production of electric vehicle parts, including electric motors, chassis, steel components, and lithium-ion cells—all of which are integral to the EV manufacturing process.
Furthermore, the park will feature facilities for assembling lithium-ion batteries, EV chargers, controllers, and electronic modules, thereby creating a complete ecosystem that supports both component manufacturing and final vehicle assembly.
These facilities will cater to not only large-scale manufacturers but also medium and small enterprises, thus generating a diverse range of industrial activity within the park.
One of the key highlights of the development is the inclusion of a dedicated Research and Development (R&D) centre, which will function as an innovation hub focused on advancing next-generation EV technologies.
The centre will play a crucial role in designing new electric vehicle models, developing battery technologies, and enhancing energy efficiency. The government anticipates that this R&D unit will not only contribute to the local growth of Kanpur’s EV industry, but also become a part of the global innovation landscape in the electric mobility sector.
Officials further emphasized that the establishment of this EV park is expected to generate significant employment opportunities for engineers, technicians, researchers, and industrial workers.
It will also catalyze economic activity in allied sectors such as logistics, electronics, and advanced materials. By attracting national and international investments, the park is likely to elevate Kanpur’s stature as a premier destination for green manufacturing in India.
The government believes this initiative will deliver long-term economic benefits to the state of Uttar Pradesh, aligning with India’s national goals of achieving net-zero emissions and boosting sustainable industrialization. The project stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to building a robust, self-reliant infrastructure for clean and green mobility.
In conclusion, the proposed EV manufacturing park near Bhimsen is more than just an industrial zone—it represents a visionary leap toward transforming Kanpur into a centre of technological excellence, economic dynamism, and environmental sustainability.
With strategic planning, focused execution, and strong public-private collaboration, the city is set to emerge as a trailblazer in India’s journey toward electric mobility and green industrialization.
