Modi Criticizes Pakistan’s Approach to Peace, Emphasizes Dialogue with China

In a recent interview with American computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at length about India’s foreign relations, particularly with Pakistan and China. The interview, broadcast on Sunday, saw Modi reiterating India’s commitment to peace while highlighting Pakistan’s repeated betrayals.

Modi asserted that every sincere effort by India to establish peaceful ties with Pakistan had been met with hostility. “We genuinely hope that they embrace wisdom and choose the path of peace,” he stated. He also pointed out that global terrorist incidents often have connections leading back to Pakistan, citing the 9/11 attacks as an example. He reminded listeners that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the attack, was found sheltering in Pakistan.

Referring to Pakistan’s alleged role in global instability, Modi said, “Today, it serves as a hub of turmoil, not just for India but for the entire world.” He recalled extending a hand of friendship by inviting then-Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to his swearing-in ceremony in 2014, hoping for a fresh chapter in relations. However, he lamented that “every sincere effort at peace was met with hostility and betrayal.”

On India’s relationship with China, Modi acknowledged that differences between neighboring countries are natural. However, he emphasized the importance of ensuring these differences do not escalate into conflicts. He stated that India prioritizes dialogue and diplomacy to address issues, including border disputes, and expressed optimism that trust between the two nations could gradually be restored.

He further noted that cooperation between India and China is crucial for regional and global stability. “The 21st century belongs to Asia, and we believe that India and China should engage in healthy competition rather than conflict,” he remarked.

When asked about former U.S. President Donald Trump, Modi observed that Trump appeared “far more prepared” for his second term, with a well-structured approach and a clear strategic roadmap.
