Samajwadi Party (SP) national spokesperson Sumaiya Rana has claimed that she has been placed under house arrest after voicing her opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill. Rana, also the national vice president of the SP’s women’s wing, stated that she received a notice from the Lucknow Police asking her to maintain peace and submit a personal bond.

Rana, 45, daughter of the late renowned poet Munawwar Rana, said that the police have demanded a personal bond worth ₹10 lakh and two sureties of the same amount. She alleged that the authorities are attempting to suppress her dissent regarding the Bill through legal intimidation.

“I have been actively opposing the Waqf Amendment Bill, and now the police are trying to muzzle my voice by issuing this notice,” she said. “I was earlier served a notice, which I refused to accept, and now it has been sent to me via WhatsApp. I will challenge this in court.”

The notice accuses Rana of engaging in actions that could lead to a disruption of peace and public order. It also directs her to explain why she should not be required to furnish the bond and sureties for one year to prevent such disturbances. She has been asked to appear before the authorities on Monday.

Rana confirmed that she would comply with the directive and appear as instructed, submitting the required bond. A senior police official has confirmed the issuance of the notice.
