The National Green Tribunal has imposed a fine of RS 20,000 on the collector of Allahabad district for not submitting report on the level of pollution in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.

The fine has been imposed following a petition according to which, it is feared that the water quality of these two rivers was less likely to be of desired level during the coming Kumbh mela in view of sewer water being drained in these holy rivers.

It may be mentioned that earlier to the petition the tribunal had directed DM Allahabad to submit report on the quality and pollution level in the waters of Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Allahabad.

The bench of NGT Chairman Justice Prakash Srivastava has taken into account a report of national clean Ganga mission according to which more than 160 mld sewer water was being mixed into these two rivers daily.

It may be mentioned sewer water of several big and small drains still goes unchecked in these rivers despite the coming up of sewage treatment plants.

For the past several decades seers and saints had been agitating on the issue of pollution in these rivers during the yearly magh Mela and the Kumbh.

On their part authorities concerned pacify the seers promising them to rid the rivers from pollution but no permanent solution to this big issue has been found till date.
