Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh:
In a chilling episode of familial violence marked by extreme cruelty, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted to death by her own relatives in Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh after she eloped with a young man from her neighbourhood.

In an apparent attempt to erase all traces of the crime, her family allegedly set her body on fire and moved to cremate her in secrecy.

According to the police, information was received on Sunday that a family was hurriedly cremating a young girl at a village cremation ground to destroy evidence of her murder.

Acting swiftly, a police team rushed to the site and doused the burning pyre with water, preventing the destruction of the body.

The partially burnt remains were seized and sent for post-mortem examination. Officials said the forensic report is awaited and will be crucial to establishing the precise cause of death.

Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against nine members of the girl’s family on multiple serious charges, including murder and criminal conspiracy.

Two relatives have been detained for questioning, while search operations are underway to trace and arrest the remaining accused, who are currently absconding.

A Relationship That Invited Wrath

Investigators said the girl and the 19-year-old youth belonged to the same community and had allegedly been in a relationship for nearly three years, despite fierce opposition from their families.

The girl’s relatives had repeatedly pressured her to sever all ties with the young man, but she reportedly refused to comply.

The youth, who survives on odd jobs in Ludhiana, had returned to his native place recently. During the preliminary inquiry, police learnt that the girl had eloped with him on Friday, January 9.

Alarmed by her disappearance, the family launched a search and, through one of the youth’s friends, discovered that the couple was in Agra, where they were reportedly planning to get married.

Dragged Back, Detained, and Tortured

Police said members of the girl’s family rushed to Agra, located the couple, forcibly dragged them back to Kasganj, and confined them inside a house belonging to one of the girl’s relatives on the outskirts of the village.

What followed, according to investigators, was a brutal assault. Both the girl and the youth were allegedly beaten, and the violence culminated in the girl’s death.

Faced with the gravity of the crime, the family allegedly decided to cremate her body in the dead of night, hoping to obliterate evidence and evade the law.

Escape and Police Intervention

In a dramatic turn, the youth reportedly managed to escape from confinement. He reached his village and informed his family about the ordeal, following which the police were alerted.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kasganj Sushil Kumar Ganga Prasad said the youth is currently in police custody and is being questioned as part of the investigation.

He added that three separate police teams have been constituted to track down and arrest the accused family members.

Police officials noted that the houses of the girl’s parents and other close relatives were found locked, suggesting that the accused fled soon after the incident.

Circle Officer (CO) Kasganj Anchal Chauhan said that when the girl and the youth eloped, neither family approached the police and instead chose to search for them independently—an omission that later spiralled into a horrific crime.

Call Records Under Scrutiny

As the investigation progresses, police are examining the call detail records of both the girl and the youth to determine the duration and nature of their relationship and to establish a clearer, minute-by-minute timeline of events leading up to the killing.

The case has once again exposed the dark underbelly of so-called “family honour,” where rigid social control and intolerance culminate in savage violence—turning homes into prisons and kin into executioners.
