A Sacred Milestone in Kashi: New Dharamshala Opens, Celebrating North-South Spiritual Unity

VARANASI: In the sacred city of Kashi, where spirituality breathes through centuries and divine chants float across the holy Ganga, Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan unveiled a modern dharamshala for the Shri Kashi Natukottai Institution on Friday — a structure he hailed as a living testament to the eternal strength of faith.

Addressing a gathering steeped in reverence, the Vice-President declared that while religion may face trials, its essence remains untouched and undiminished.

“Crises come and go, but Dharma stands unshaken. Today, faith has prevailed once again, and this divine abode is its sacred symbol,” he said.

His words echoed deeply in a city revered as the gateway to liberation.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also graced the event. Radhakrishnan reminisced about his first pilgrimage to Kashi, recalling the profound transformation the holy city bestowed upon him a quarter-century ago.

“After taking a dip in the purifying waters of Maa Ganga, I embraced a vegetarian life. Kashi changed me — and its grace continues to transform souls,” he shared.

He praised the city’s monumental transformation in recent years, crediting the vision and devotion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

“The Kashi of today reflects the tireless Sadhana of two karma yogis,” he said, noting the city’s newfound splendor while preserving its eternal sanctity.

The Vice-President reminded the gathering that the new dharamshala is not merely a shelter for pilgrims — it is a sacred bridge connecting North and South India, reinforcing a centuries-old spiritual bond.

Since 1863, the institution has welcomed Tamil devotees seeking wisdom and salvation.

Many great souls — from learned scholars to the nationalist poet Subramania Bharati — walked these very ghats, drank from Kashi’s fountain of knowledge, and left their imprint on its divine soil.

He invoked the timeless aura of Kashi — its countless temples, the fragrance of incense, and the resonance of sacred mantras that have never ceased.

“Here, every breath is a prayer and every step a pilgrimage,” he said, adding that the dharamshala will continue to be a sanctuary for devotees from Tamil Nadu and beyond.

Radhakrishnan also highlighted recent spiritual milestones: the return of the revered idol of Annapurna Devi and initiatives such as the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam that have deepened India’s civilizational unity.

“These are not mere events — they are signs of a spiritual awakening under enlightened leadership,” he remarked.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath noted the city’s remarkable physical transformation alongside its spiritual renaissance.

He shared that development works amounting to nearly ₹51,000 crore have been sanctioned in Varanasi, with projects worth ₹34,000 crore already completed and inaugurated by the Prime Minister.

The remaining ₹16,000 crore worth of works are progressing swiftly toward completion.

In the divine lap of Kashi, this new dharamshala stands as a beacon — not only for pilgrims, but also for the living, breathing continuity of Sanatan culture.

In a world of fleeting moments, faith here remains eternal, guiding generations toward light, devotion, and unity.
