Abhishek Sharma’s Highs and Lows, Surya’s Return to Form Give India Strong Signs Ahead of T20 World Cup

Abhishek Sharma’s series against New Zealand has been full of extremes. He was out for zero on the very first ball twice.

But he also smashed two very fast half-centuries. This pattern caught everyone’s attention.

When batting coach Sitanshu Kotak was asked about it, he smiled and explained that Abhishek is not a wild hitter as many think.

“He plays many shots, but it doesn’t look like slogging,” Kotak said. “Most of his shots are played based on the quality of the ball.

That is very important for an aggressive batsman.”

Abhishek usually hits with a straight bat. Even when he plays cross shots, he does it cleanly without swinging wildly. He does not move too much in the crease either.

Kotak called him a “smart batsman” and gave an example.

In the second match at Raipur, Abhishek was caught at deep square leg while trying to play a big shot off Jacob Duffy.

In the next match at Guwahati, the bowlers tried the same plan. But this time, Abhishek was ready. He played straighter shots and avoided the trap.

The coach also revealed that Abhishek plans his innings carefully.

“We discuss what areas bowlers will target, their pace, and which shots will work best,” Kotak said. “He doesn’t just go and hit randomly. He listens and plans well.”

Surya, Isha,n and Sanju Show Positive Signs

As India prepares to defend the T20 World Cup, Kotak said the biggest positives from the series were Suryakumar Yadav finding his rhythm again and Ishan Kishan showing signs of revival.

About Surya, Kotak said there was never any doubt.

“He has been the world’s best T20 batsman for a long time. A bad patch can happen in this format,” he explained.

“Even when he wasn’t scoring big runs, he still played some important innings.”

Kotak added that in T20 cricket, impact matters more than just big scores.

“Sometimes a quick 10 off 25 balls can be more important than a slow 60,” he said.

He also backed Sanju Samson to return to form soon.

“Every player goes through rough phases,” Kotak said. “Sanju works very hard. We know his ability, and he will score runs again.”

Ishan Kishan Likely to Return Soon

Ishan Kishan had a small injury,ry which affected his comeback. But Kotak said he is likely to return for the T20 match in Thiruvananthapuram.

“The physios are watching him closely. A decision will be taken soon, but chances are high,” he said.

In practice, Ishan looked sharp. He faced fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah carefully but attacked Morne Morkel with big shots, even though he top-edged one attempt.

Kotak said Ishan brings great flexibility to the team.

“Whenever Ishan plays, he usually performs well,” he said. “With Sanju and another opening batsman, it gives the team more options.”

The coach looked happy seeing his batsmen in good form as India builds momentum ahead of major tournaments.
