Agriculture Department Cracks Down on Fertilizer Irregularities in Prayagraj; Notices to 37 Committees, FIRs Against Three

1

The Agriculture Department in Prayagraj has launched a stringent crackdown on irregularities detected in the distribution of fertilizers. Following a series of inspections across the district, authorities have issued notices to 37 committees and lodged FIRs against three for serious violations.

Committees Under the Scanner

Officials stated that a total of 188 committees, including both cooperative societies and private operators, are engaged in the task of supplying fertilizers to farmers across Prayagraj. To ensure accountability, inspections were carried out in several regions, such as Kheri, Pratappur, Koraon, and Shankargarh. These checks revealed that a number of committees had failed to adhere to prescribed operational norms.

As a result, the department has moved decisively by serving “show cause” notices to 37 operators who were found guilty of lapses and irregularities.

Nature of Irregularities

During the inspections, several discrepancies were discovered:

  • Lack of PS machines to count and weigh fertilizer bags.
  • Absence of entry registers makes it difficult to track distribution records.
  • Operational mismanagement and other procedural shortcomings raised concerns about transparency.

Given the seriousness of these findings, FIRs have been formally registered against three committees, ensuring that strict legal action follows.

Quality Control Measures

To further safeguard farmers’ interests, the department has collected 105 samples of different fertilizer varieties. These samples have been dispatched to government laboratories for thorough testing to confirm their quality and compliance with agricultural standards.

Department’s Assurance to Farmers

Deputy District Agriculture Officer Vikas Mishra appealed to farmers not to panic or resort to hoarding fertilizers. He stressed that the government has ensured an adequate supply of fertilizers through various committees, sufficient to meet the demands of the farming community.

He also urged farmers to adopt balanced fertilizer usage, reminding them that indiscriminate or excessive use could harm soil fertility and crop health in the long run.

A Step Toward Transparency and Accountability

The Agriculture Department’s action reflects its commitment to enforcing strict transparency and accountability in the supply chain of fertilizers. By cracking down on irregularities, registering FIRs, and monitoring fertilizer quality, the department seeks to protect farmers’ rights and ensure that agricultural resources are distributed fairly and effectively.
