Air India AI-171 Crash: No Technical Faults Reported, Black Box Recovered, Toll May Reach 279

Ahmedabad — Preliminary findings suggest no technical issues with Air India Flight AI-171 before its fatal crash last Thursday. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (VT-ANB), which crashed into the B J Medical College campus minutes after takeoff, had recently undergone major maintenance and engine inspections. The death toll stands at 279, pending official confirmation.

Aircraft Health Checks & Investigation
The aircraft underwent a C-check in June 2022, with the next due in December 2025. Both engines had been overhauled or inspected as per schedule. Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed that the aircraft’s black box was recovered and a high-level probe has been ordered. A multidisciplinary committee under the Home Secretary will lead the inquiry, with results expected within three months. Eight of Air India’s 34 Dreamliners have undergone safety checks so far.

Former Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha called the twin-engine failure “highly unusual,” citing possible fuel or control system issues, while urging restraint on sabotage theories.

Rescue & Identification Efforts
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has deployed forensic and medical teams. DNA testing is ongoing, with 11 victims identified so far and three bodies handed over. Authorities have mobilized 230 teams across 18 Gujarat districts to assist families. Civil Hospital officials report the death toll may rise as more remains are recovered.
