Amit Shah Accuses Congress of Altering Assam’s Demographics, Urges Voters to Back BJP to End Infiltration

India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday claimed that Assam’s demographic balance was drastically altered during Congress rule, alleging that the opposition encouraged illegal infiltration in the state.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the 10th Missing Youth Festival organised by Takam Mising Porin Kebang at Kareng Chapari in Assam, Shah said the Congress government allowed unchecked infiltration, which led to a complete transformation of the state’s population structure.

He asserted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP-led government is actively working to reverse this demographic trend.

Shah alleged that the population of infiltrators in Assam increased from virtually zero to nearly 6.4 million during Congress rule, and that in seven districts, infiltrators had become the majority.

Appealing to the public ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Shah urged voters to support the BJP to make Assam completely free from illegal infiltration.

Praise for the Mising Community’s Role

The Home Minister highlighted the contribution of the Mising community in preventing infiltrators from settling in the upper regions of Assam.

He said their hardworking lifestyle and vigilance played a crucial role in safeguarding the region.

He added that stopping infiltration is a collective responsibility and emphasised that there is no need for violence or weapons to achieve this goal.

Land Reclaimed from Illegal Occupation

Shah said the Modi government is taking multiple measures to counter demographic changes and illegal migration.

He urged people to elect the BJP government for a third term in Assam and strengthen Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the fight against illegal immigrants.

According to Shah, BJP-led governments in Assam have reclaimed 1.26 lakh acres of land that were under illegal occupation by infiltrators.

Tribal Communities Struggled Under Congress

The Home Minister further alleged that during the Congress rule, several tribal communities were forced to struggle to protect their identity and rights.

He assured that the BJP-led central government is committed to resolving all issues of the Mising community through appointed negotiators.

Tea Garden Workers Given Land Rights

Targeting Congress again, Shah said Dibrugarh is known as the “Tea Capital” of India, yet Congress allegedly used “toolkits” to malign Assam and its tea industry.

He credited Chief Minister Sarma with granting land rights to tea garden workers — a long-pending demand.

Major Projects Launched

During his visit, Shah launched development projects worth ₹1,715 crore. These included:

  • A second Assembly complex and MLA hostel in Dibrugarh costing ₹284 crore
  • A multi-purpose sports complex built at a cost of ₹238 crore

Assam Tea to Reach Europe Tariff-Free

Speaking at a public gathering at Khanikar Parade Ground, Shah referred to a trade agreement with the European Union, stating that Assam’s tea will now reach European countries without tariffs.

He said Prime Minister Modi has worked to take Assam tea to global markets, including Paris, Berlin, and other major cities in Europe.
