PRAYAGRAJ: A heartbreaking road accident on the GT Road near Mahgaon in the Chail police station area claimed the lives of a young man and his cousin sister on Friday morning, while another cousin sister is fighting for her life.
The fatal crash occurred when a speeding, uncontrolled car rammed into their motorcycle as they attempted to cross the highway. The car driver is reported to have been arrested.
The vehicle further crashed into a roadside kiosk, injuring the woman driver and her chauffeur.
According to Jai Singh Yadav, a resident of Bharetha village under the Puramufti police limits in Prayagraj, his 20-year-old son, Vijendra Yadav, had gone to his maternal aunt’s house in Mahgaon to help with paddy harvesting.
After completing the work in the fields, Vijendra was taking his two maternal cousins — 18-year-old Shimla and 16-year-old Khushi, daughters of Kamal Singh Yadav — to collect payment for the harvest.
As they attempted to cross the GT Road near Mahgaon, a fast-moving car coming from the Prayagraj side hit their bike with tremendous force. Vijendra was dragged under the vehicle and died on the spot.
Shimla and Khushi sustained serious injuries. The car then smashed into a kiosk, injuring school teacher Richa Mishra and the driver.
Fortunately, the airbags deployed, preventing major injuries to the occupants.
Police arrived promptly and rushed the critically injured girls to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj. Sadly, Shimla succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Khushi remains in critical condition.
The body of Vijendra has been sent for post-mortem, and authorities have detained the car driver for questioning, confirmed Station House Officer Shashikant Mishra.
This tragic incident once again highlights the alarming frequency of fatal road accidents in Uttar Pradesh.
While road mishaps occur across India, Uttar Pradesh continues to report disproportionately high daily fatalities compared to many other states. Despite repeated campaigns on traffic safety, the crisis persists.
There is now a growing public demand for the state government to set up a dedicated special task force to analyze the underlying causes — including overspeeding, reckless driving, poor road engineering, and inadequate enforcement — and to implement a concrete, time-bound plan to reduce daily casualties.
Every life lost is a family shattered, and urgent action is needed to protect citizens on the roads
