Security Cover for EAM S. Jaishankar Enhanced with Bullet-Resistant Vehicles

In a move reflecting heightened security concerns, the central government has strengthened the security detail of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Official sources revealed on Wednesday that two bullet-resistant vehicles have recently been added to his convoy, following a comprehensive review of his Z-category protection.

This decision comes in the wake of rising tensions between India and Pakistan, triggered by a recent military conflict and India’s stern diplomatic stance against Islamabad.

The escalation follows the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives and prompted a forceful response from New Delhi, known as Operation Sindoor.

At the forefront of India’s diplomatic outreach, Jaishankar, 70, has been actively engaging with global leaders and foreign ministers to provide clarity on India’s counter-terrorism response.

His increasing international visibility and involvement in high-stakes diplomacy have raised the stakes regarding his security.

Sources from the central security establishment stated that intelligence agencies recently assessed the threat level surrounding the minister and recommended a reinforcement of his existing security setup.

As a result, two newly inducted bulletproof vehicles have been integrated into his Z-category convoy.

Officials confirmed that these additions are part of a broader strengthening of Jaishankar’s security framework. The decision is aligned with evolving threat perceptions, especially given the volatile geopolitical climate in the region.

It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Home Affairs had upgraded Jaishankar’s protection level from Y to Z category in 2023, based on prior assessments.

This level of cover is one of the highest in the hierarchy of VIP security provided under the central government’s protection program.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which is tasked with protecting high-profile individuals under the central list, continues to provide armed security to Jaishankar.

The CRPF’s VIP Security Wing currently protects nearly 200 individuals, including top political leaders such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior Congress figures Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The central VIP security structure is categorized in ascending order of threat response from X, Y, Y-plus, Z, Z-plus, to the highest tier, Z-plus with Advanced Security Liaison (ASL). Jaishankar’s inclusion in the Z category underscores the government’s recognition of the increased risks involved in his role as India’s chief diplomat during these turbulent times.
