In a continuing crackdown against individuals expressing pro-Pakistan sentiments following the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that one more person had been apprehended.

This fresh arrest has taken the total number of people detained in Assam on similar charges to nine.

Providing details of the latest development, Sarma stated that the arrest was made late Friday night in the Sribhumi district.

The individual allegedly posted a “Pakistan Zindabad” slogan on Facebook, showing support for Pakistan in the wake of the devastating terrorist assault that shook the nation earlier in the week.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister confirmed the incident, reiterating his government’s firm stance against any expression of sympathy or support for Pakistan, especially in the context of terrorist activities targeting Indian civilians.

“Assam will not tolerate any individual who, directly or indirectly, supports or defends Pakistan in connection with the heinous attack in Pahalgam,” Sarma emphasized in his post on Friday.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had revealed that two individuals had been apprehended on Thursday, including Aminul Islam, a sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the opposition party All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Subsequently, on Friday, six additional arrests were carried out in different parts of the state as law enforcement agencies intensified their operations.

According to information shared by Sarma, among those previously arrested, two were residents of Silchar in Cachar district, while one person each was picked up from the districts of Hailakandi, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Barpeta, and Biswanath.

Authorities have charged the arrested individuals with promoting enmity and hurting national sentiments through their social media activities.

The surge in arrests comes in the wake of the horrific terrorist attack that took place in Baisaran, a well-known tourist destination in Pahalgam located in South Kashmir.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, claimed the lives of at least 26 people, most of whom were tourists visiting the region. Many others were grievously injured in the assault, leaving the entire nation in shock and mourning.

Chief Minister Sarma’s strong action reflects the Assam government’s zero-tolerance policy towards any form of anti-national activity or speech that could glorify or support forces hostile to India.

He has directed police forces across the state to remain vigilant and take immediate action against any individual found engaging in such behavior, especially on social media platforms.

The incident has also ignited a larger conversation about responsible use of digital platforms and the role of social media monitoring in maintaining internal security, particularly during times of national crisis.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine if there are larger networks or coordinated groups behind the pro-Pakistan messaging seen after the Pahalgam trage
