A late-night security breach at US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida ended in fatal gunfire after an armed man allegedly entered the restricted perimeter, prompting an immediate response from the US Secret Service.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time on Sunday near the north gate of the Palm Beach property.
According to officials, agents observed a man in his early 20s carrying what appeared to be a shotgun along with a fuel container.
He was subsequently shot by two Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office after crossing into the secured zone.
Authorities later identified the deceased as 21-year-old Austin Martin. Officials stated that his identity was initially withheld pending notification of family members.
No law enforcement personnel were injured during the confrontation.
At the time of the breach, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were in Washington, D.C., at the White House.
Federal Coordination Underway
US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed she had been in contact with President Trump and was coordinating with federal agencies following the incident.
She expressed relief that both the President and law enforcement officers were unharmed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead in the investigation.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that all necessary resources are being deployed and that the bureau is working closely with the Secret Service and local authorities.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt praised the rapid response by federal agents, describing their actions as swift and decisive in neutralising a potentially dangerous situation.
Security Details and Investigation
Secret Service Special Agent Rafael Barros confirmed that two federal agents were directly involved in the shooting.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said investigators are still reviewing details, including how many rounds were discharged.
Mar-a-Lago, which serves as both a private residence and a heavily protected location for the President, maintains strict security protocols even when Trump is not present.
The breach has once again underscored the sensitivity surrounding presidential security and the rapid-response mandate of federal protective services.
