Assam in Tears: Remembering Zubeen Garg, the Voice of a Generation
Assam is in mourning. The sudden passing of Zubeen Garg, the prodigious singer whose voice defined a generation, has left an indelible void in the hearts of millions.
Known for his soul-stirring songs and magnetic stage presence, Garg was more than a musician—he was the voice of Assam, the pride of the Northeast, and a cultural icon whose music transcended borders.
On September 19, during a trip to Singapore for the Northeast India Festival, tragedy struck. Garg, who had delighted audiences across decades with hits like Ya Ali, lost his life in a swimming accident.
News of his demise reverberated across Assam, sending shockwaves through towns, cities, and villages alike. Social media feeds overflowed with grief, tributes, and memories of the singer whose music had been a constant companion to so many.
The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has since taken rigorous steps to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who reportedly accompanied Garg during the trip, has been taken into custody for questioning. Earlier, SIT teams conducted raids at the homes of Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, and NEIF organizer Shyamkanu Mahant.
The raids, however, were met with immense public emotion, as hundreds of fans gathered outside, some expressing their grief in protest. Police had to use a baton charge to control the crowd, while two people were detained for inciting violence.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured the people that the investigation would be thorough and transparent, and that all individuals connected to Garg’s Singapore trip would be questioned. He emphasized that public trust and restraint were crucial to ensuring justice.
Garg’s funeral on September 22 was nothing short of historic. Lakhs of fans thronged the streets, turning every city and town into a sea of sorrow and remembrance.
Even policemen, tasked with maintaining order, were seen weeping alongside the mourners. People from all walks of life—students, office workers, farmers, and artists—joined together to pay their final respects. Chants of “RIP Zubeen Garg” and heartfelt songs echoed through the streets as the beloved singer was laid to rest with full state honors.
Fans recalled their personal connections with Garg’s music—how his songs provided comfort, inspired love, and became anthems of hope.
From local festivals to weddings, from rainy evenings to road trips, his voice had woven itself into the everyday lives of Assam’s people. The sense of loss is not just for a musician, but for a cultural beacon whose art united a generation.
The SIT, a 10-member team, continues its investigation, determined to provide clarity on the events leading to his untimely death. As Assam grieves, the legacy of Zubeen Garg lives on through his music—melodies that will continue to echo in hearts, homes, and heartsongs across the Northeast.
In a state that celebrates its rich culture and musical heritage, Zubeen Garg’s death is more than a personal loss—it is a collective heartbreak, a moment when the voice of a people has been silenced, if only physically. His songs remain a permanent tribute to a life lived for music and a people who loved him beyond words.
