Banda district officials in Uttar Pradesh demolish the house of accused who raped and murdered a minor girl
In a grim reminder of the persistent scourge of sexual violence against minors in India, the Banda district administration in Uttar Pradesh demolished the house of a 30-year-old farmer accused of the rape and murder of a minor girl.
The action was taken because the structure was illegally constructed on government land. The accused, currently incarcerated, faces charges of luring the young victim to his home with promises of chocolate on June 3, 2025, and subsequently raping and brutally assaulting her.
Believing her to be dead, he disposed of her body in a plastic bag in a nearby jungle.
Miraculously, the girl was found alive but unconscious by villagers and her family. She succumbed to her injuries ten days later despite medical treatment.
The administration, following a revenue inquiry, confirmed the illegal construction on the gram sabha land, issued notices, and proceeded with demolition after no response was received from the family.
This incident underscores a harrowing paradox: despite stringent legal frameworks like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and harsh penalties under the Indian Penal Code, including life imprisonment or even death for rape of minors, such crimes continue unabated.
For instance, a similar case in West Bengal saw an e-rickshaw driver sentenced to life imprisonment for raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl .
The Banda case, occurring mere months after this conviction, highlights the alarming frequency of such offenses and raises urgent questions about implementation, deterrence, and societal failures.
The Banda case is a microcosm of India’s struggle against sexual violence. While strict laws exist, their impact is diluted by systemic inefficiencies, judicial ambiguities, and societal apathy.
A multi-pronged approach—including faster trials, judicial sensitivity training, community engagement, and victim-centric policies—is essential to break this cycle of violence. Until then, headlines like these will continue to haunt the national conscience.
