Bhopal Student Udit Gayaki Dies After Alleged Police Assault; Postmortem Reveals Multiple Severe Injuries
Bhopal— The postmortem report of 22-year-old BTech student Udit Gayaki, who tragically died following an alleged police assault in Bhopal, has revealed a shocking extent of injuries, including severe trauma to his shoulders, waist, abdomen, and other parts of the body.
The autopsy lists the primary cause of death as damage to the pancreas, caused by a forceful blow to the lower back, resulting in internal bleeding and trauma-induced shock.
The autopsy, conducted by a five-member medical team at TIT College, documented at least a dozen distinct injuries.
Udit sustained deep bruises near his eyes, forehead, ears, shoulders, waist, abdomen, and the back of his head. The pancreas rupture, considered the fatal injury, suggests the assault involved extreme force, not consistent with a minor scuffle or accidental impact. The entire procedure was video-recorded for official records.
Following these findings, Madhya Pradesh police have registered a murder case against constables Santosh Bamaniya and Saurabh Arya, though neither has been arrested yet. Both officers have been suspended pending investigation.
Details of the Incident
According to CCTV footage obtained from the Piplani area, the incident occurred around 1:30 am on Thursday. Videos appear to show one policeman repeatedly hitting Udit with a stick while another restrained him.
Udit’s friends reported that they were returning from a party in Indrapuri when the police confronted them. Udit reportedly ran into a nearby alley, prompting the constables to chase him.
His friends later found him with his shirt torn and his body marked with multiple injuries, and he was rushed to AIIMS Bhopal, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhopal Range 2, Vivek Singh, stated, “The deceased had at least 12 injuries.
The pancreas was severely damaged, but it is unlikely that this occurred from a simple blow with a stick. A detailed investigation is required to determine how such a fatal injury occurred.” He added, “Both constables are yet to be arrested. Custody will be sought soon for questioning, after which arrests will follow.”
Family Reaction and Social Outcry
Udit’s family is demanding strict punishment for the officers involved.
His father, Rajkumar Gayaki, an engineer, said, “I do not understand why my son was beaten so mercilessly that he lost his life.
These policemen should face the strongest possible sentence.” His mother, a teacher, and his brother-in-law, a DSP with the Hawk Force in Balaghat, are deeply shaken by the incident.
Friends and residents have expressed outrage, questioning why a young student returning from a party was subjected to such extreme brutality by law enforcement.
While the constables have admitted to assaulting Udit, they claim there was no intent to kill, a statement that many have condemned as inadequate and implausible given the severity of the injuries.
The incident has sparked wider debate over police brutality in India, especially involving young citizens.
Analysts note that while police are tasked with maintaining law and order, the level of violence in this case — ultimately resulting in death — raises serious concerns about the misuse of authority, lack of restraint, and absence of accountability mechanisms in law enforcement.
The case continues to be under investigation, and authorities have promised a transparent inquiry to ensure justice is served.
