Bumrah, Jadeja and Jaiswal find place in ICC Test XI 2024, but ODI team leaves India out
Indian cricket had mixed fortunes as the ICC announced its Test and ODI Teams of the Year on Friday. While Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Yashasvi Jaiswal earned spots in the Test XI, no Indian player was included in the ODI team.
Jasprit Bumrah stood out as the bowler of 2024, taking 71 wickets at an average of 14.92. He finished as the leading wicket-taker in Tests for the year and became the first bowler in history to claim 200 career Test wickets at an average below 20.
Bumrah’s achievements included 19 wickets in four Tests against England and 32 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, where he delivered a nine-wicket match haul.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s emergence as a Test opener was another bright spot. The 23-year-old scored 1,478 runs in 2024 at an average of 54.74, second only to England’s Joe Root, who tallied 1,556 runs.
After a shaky tour of South Africa in December 2023, Jaiswal bounced back during the home Test series against England in January 2024, amassing 712 runs, including two double centuries. His consistency continued with half-centuries against Bangladesh and a remarkable 161 against Australia in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, making him India’s top scorer in the series.
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, as reliable as ever, contributed 527 runs and claimed 48 wickets at an average of 24.29, proving his value across diverse conditions.
The ICC Test XI, captained by Australia’s Pat Cummins, included four English players, two New Zealanders—among them Kane Williamson—and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis, who impressed with 1,049 runs at an average of 74.92.
The ODI Snub: A Quiet Year for India in 50-Overs
India’s absence from the ODI XI was notable. The team played just three ODIs in 2024—a series against Sri Lanka where they lost two games, while the third ended in a tie. This limited participation left no Indian players in contention for the ICC’s ODI Team of the Year.
The ODI XI was dominated by players from Sri Lanka (4), Pakistan (3), and Afghanistan (3), with the West Indies contributing one player.
This marked the first time since 2021 that no Indian player featured in the ICC ODI XI, a stark contrast to previous years.
In 2023, six Indian players—Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Kuldeep Yadav—made the ODI XI. In 2022, Mohammed Siraj and Shreyas Iyer represented India, while in 2019, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, and Kuldeep Yadav earned places.
Even in 2021, when India played only six ODIs, winning four, none made it to the ODI XI.
