Republican Congressman Randy Fine on Monday tabled a bill seeking to annex Greenland and eventually make it the 51st state of the United States.

The proposed legislation, titled the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act, is designed to provide a formal legal framework for taking control of the vast Arctic territory and integrating it into the US federal system.

Bill Seeks Legal Path to Annexation

According to Congressman Fine, the bill is driven by strategic necessity. He argued that countering the growing influence of Russia and China in the Arctic region has become critical for American national security.

Under the proposed law, once Greenland is brought under US control, Congress would be presented with a detailed report outlining the political, economic, and administrative reforms required for statehood.

If approved, the bill would authorise the United States to proceed with the process of annexation and state formation.

However, it must first pass both chambers of the United States Congress—the House of Representatives and the Senate—before it can become law.

Trump’s Hardline Stance on Greenland

US President Donald Trump has already made his position clear, stating unequivocally that Greenland is vital to America’s defense and long-term strategic interests.

Speaking on the issue, Trump said the United States needs Greenland and is prepared to take decisive steps to secure it. Greenland is essential for American security,” Trump said.

“We are moving in that direction, whether other countries like it or not. If we have to take it by force or buy it, we will do so. One way or another, we will get it.”

Trump’s remarks underline Washington’s growing focus on the Arctic as a future theatre of strategic competition, particularly as melting ice opens new shipping routes and access to critical natural resources.

Why Greenland Matters

Greenland’s geographic position makes it a key strategic asset. Located between North America and Europe, it offers a commanding vantage point over Arctic sea lanes and potential missile trajectories.

The island is also believed to be rich in rare earth minerals and other natural resources essential for modern technology and defence industries.

What Comes Next

While the legislation marks a significant escalation in US ambitions regarding Greenland, how Washington would govern and utilise the territory after a takeover remains unclear.

Questions remain over military expansion, resource extraction, political rights for Greenland’s population, and the broader international response.

As the bill moves through Congress and rhetoric intensifies, it remains to be seen how the United States plans to operationalise Greenland’s strategic value—and at what diplomatic cost.
