Centre Deploys CRPF Battalions in Jammu to Counter Pakistan-Backed Terror Threats

New Delhi: In a decisive move to strengthen the counter-terrorism security grid, the Centre has ordered the deployment of three battalions of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the Jammu region.

This step, officials say, is part of India’s broader security strategy to counter cross-border terrorism and thwart Pakistan’s continuing attempts to destabilise peace and development in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Each battalion — comprising nearly 800 personnel — will replace Rashtriya Rifles units of the Indian Army currently deployed in Udhampur and Kathua districts.

The Army units, in turn, will be reassigned to new tasks, particularly to bolster the country’s defence along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

A New Security Blueprint Against Terrorism

According to sources quoted by PTI, this realignment is part of a long-term security blueprint that the government has been working on for nearly two years.

The strategy involves gradually handing over responsibilities in hinterland areas to central paramilitary forces under the Union Home Ministry, while freeing up Army resources for border defence.

The plan, officials added, also includes eventual transfer of select areas in the Kashmir Valley to the CRPF, once the deployment in Udhampur and Kathua is completed.

The three battalions being positioned in Jammu have been drawn from CRPF personnel with proven track records in counter-terror and counter-insurgency operations.

They have previously served with “distinction” in some of the most volatile zones. To make them battle-ready, these units are being equipped with modern weaponry, secure communication systems, armoured vehicles, and advanced surveillance tools.

Focus on Jammu: Rising Terror Threats in a Sensitive Region

Security in the Jammu region — particularly its dense forests and border belts — has taken on new urgency over the past few years after an uptick in terror attacks and infiltrations.

The region’s strategic significance lies in the fact that 485 km of the 2,289 km-long India-Pakistan International Border (IB) passes through Jammu, in addition to a small portion of the LoC.

Intelligence agencies have repeatedly flagged attempts by Pakistan-backed terror outfits to push infiltrators, weapons, and narcotics into the Jammu region, turning it into a new theatre of their so-called “proxy war” after facing setbacks in the Kashmir Valley.

Abrogation of Article 370: A Turning Point

The government’s shift in security policy also comes in the backdrop of improved conditions following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

Since then, officials say, Pakistan’s ISI and its terror proxies have tried to open new fronts in Jammu to destabilise the region and derail India’s path of peace and progress.

By enhancing the presence of CRPF in these hinterland areas, the Centre aims to ensure that any future attempts to reignite unrest or spread violence are swiftly neutralised.

The Larger Message

The deployment sends out a clear signal — India is determined to crush the terror ecosystem sustained by Pakistan and its proxies.

While the Army strengthens the frontlines against cross-border aggression, the CRPF’s reinforced presence in the hinterland will ensure that terrorist modules and sleeper cells find no haven.

This dual-pronged approach highlights India’s resolve: development and peace in Jammu & Kashmir will not be held hostage to Pakistan’s proxy war.
