Cheteshwar Pujara Hails Travis Head–Abhishek Sharma Duo as One of the Most Explosive Opening Partnerships in IPL History

Former Indian Test cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has praised the opening combination of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, stating that the pair has redefined aggressive batting at the top of the order for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) over the past few Indian Premier League seasons.

According to Pujara, the duo’s fearless approach during the early overs has set a new benchmark for how teams should capitalize on the powerplay.

Speaking on JioHotstar’s cricket discussion show “Out or Out of the Park,” Pujara highlighted the enormous impact the two left-handed batters have had on SRH’s attacking style.

Over the last couple of years, their explosive starts have often allowed the team to build intimidating totals, making them one of the most dangerous opening partnerships seen in the tournament.

Reflecting on their performances, Pujara noted that although the previous season did not deliver the same level of success as 2024, when Sunrisers Hyderabad advanced all the way to the IPL final, the intent and aggression shown by the opening pair have remained unmatched.

Pujara said that based on the performances witnessed in recent seasons, Head and Abhishek can certainly be regarded as among the most destructive opening combinations in the history of the IPL.

Both players possess the ability to launch into attacking mode right from the very first delivery, which puts bowlers under pressure immediately.

Their fearless stroke play and ability to dominate bowlers early in the innings have frequently helped Sunrisers Hyderabad post massive totals.

Pujara pointed out that SRH have repeatedly crossed the 250-run mark in recent seasons, something very few teams have managed to accomplish consistently.

According to him, a major reason behind those enormous totals is the aggressive momentum created by the openers.

He emphasized that their ability to strike the ball powerfully to all parts of the ground and do so consistently is what separates them from other batting partnerships.

Pujara remarked that when cricket fans talk about intimidating opening pairs in IPL history, the iconic partnership of Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru is often remembered.

However, he suggested that the current SRH pair of Head and Abhishek may be even more aggressive and destructive in terms of their attacking mindset.

According to Pujara, bowlers often feel enormous pressure when they see the two walking out to open the innings.

Their willingness to attack from the outset means that no bowler relishes the prospect of starting an innings against such a fearless duo.

Concerns Over SRH’s Away Record

While acknowledging the explosive batting power of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Pujara also pointed out a significant weakness in the team’s overall performance.

He explained that although SRH tend to be extremely dominant when playing on their home ground in Hyderabad, their results in away fixtures have been far less impressive.

Pujara observed that when the team plays outside their home venue, they often fail to maintain the same level of aggression and scoring momentum that they display in Hyderabad. One of the reasons, he believes, is that rival teams have now understood SRH’s strategy and are better prepared to counter it.

Opposition sides are aware that Sunrisers Hyderabad heavily depend on their powerful top-order batting to post huge totals.

Players such as Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Heinrich Klaasen form the backbone of the team’s batting lineup. When these key hitters are dismissed early, the rest of the batting order sometimes struggles to sustain the scoring pace.

Pujara explained that opposing teams take advantage of this vulnerability. By removing the primary power-hitters quickly, they are able to restrict SRH from building the kind of high totals the team is known for.

According to him, addressing this dependence on a few star batters will be essential if the franchise wants to maintain consistency across venues.

He concluded by saying that while the opening pair has brought a thrilling brand of attacking cricket to the IPL,

Sunrisers Hyderabad will need to strengthen their batting depth and adaptability, especially in away matches, if they hope to remain a dominant force in future seasons.
