Lucknow: At the 42nd annual convention of the Uttar Pradesh Judicial Service Association, held on the premises of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, Chief Justice Arun Bhansali emphasized the urgent need to make the judicial system more effective and accessible.

He stressed that district courts are the foundation of justice delivery and that repeated adjournments of hearings erode public trust in the judiciary.

“We must work together to ensure that justice is not delayed. The repeated rescheduling of hearings shakes people’s faith in the judicial process,” Chief Justice Bhansali said.

Judges Must Retain Public Trust

The Chief Justice said that citizens who come to courts in search of justice should always leave with trust in the system. Quoting the Constitution, he said the judiciary must continually strive to uphold its credibility and independence.

Key Responsibilities of District Judges

Senior Judge of the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow Bench, Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan, highlighted that 72% of all legal matters in Uttar Pradesh are handled by district courts. This places a significant responsibility on district judges to ensure the smooth functioning and delivery of justice.

Retirement Age Should Be Raised to 62 Years

Association President R.D. Singh suggested increasing the retirement age of judicial service officers to 62 years, citing examples from other states. He stressed that experienced officers could contribute longer to strengthening the judicial system.

He also highlighted the government’s ongoing development projects, such as:

  • The Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA),
  • A new Convention Centre (Kalpavriksha) in Gorakhpur,
  • And multiple infrastructure expansions aimed at generating local employment and boosting regional growth.
