Dark Side of Campus Life: When Harassment Turns Deadly

Bengaluru — In the quiet lanes of Green Garden Layout, what seemed like an ordinary Friday morning turned into a tragedy that once again exposed the toxic underbelly of college life.

Sana Parvin, a bright 19-year-old BBA student at Koshys College, was found dead in her rented apartment, leaving behind a haunting question — how far can campus bullying and harassment push a young mind?

Sana, a second-year student from Kodagu district, was known among her peers as cheerful and ambitious.

But behind the smile, her father Abdul Nazeer says, she had been battling relentless mental torture from a senior student — Reefas, a man from Thrissur, Kerala.

According to Nazeer’s police complaint, Reefas had been tormenting Sana for months through phone calls and messages — abusing, blackmailing, and emotionally cornering her.

Despite the family’s repeated pleas and even intervention from her college’s head of department, Amala Sen, the harassment allegedly continued.

On Thursday, Reefas reportedly left town. The next morning, Sana was found unconscious in her room. By the time her father reached Dr BR Ambedkar Hospital, she was gone.

Police say she died by suicide around 10 am, unable to bear the constant psychological pressure.

Her father, shattered by grief, has demanded that the culprit be brought to justice under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

But Sana’s death is not an isolated story — it’s part of a disturbing pattern. Across many campuses, groups of rogue students wield their social dominance and toxic influence over juniors, often using emotional manipulation, humiliation, or blackmail.

Many victims, afraid of stigma or disbelief, suffer in silence until it’s too late.

Just a day before Sana’s death, another young woman — Yamini Priya, a 20-year-old pharmacy student in Bengaluru — was murdered by a man who couldn’t take her rejection.

Her alleged killer, Vignesh, had been harassing her for months to marry him. When she refused, he turned violent.

Two young lives — full of dreams, talent, and promise — snuffed out within 24 hours. Both victims of male ego and unchecked harassment.

As Bengaluru mourns, the message echoes far beyond the city’s colleges: harassment is not “campus drama”; it’s cruelty that kills. Institutions must act — not after tragedy, but before it strikes.
