Delhi Dargah Tragedy: Six Dead After Roof Collapse Near Humayun’s Tomb – Who Is Responsible for Neglect?

A solemn visit for Friday prayers turned into a horrific tragedy when the roof of a room at Dargah Sharif Patte Shah, located near the Humayun’s Tomb complex in Nizamuddin, suddenly collapsed.

The incident claimed six lives and left several others injured, raising urgent questions about negligence, structural safety, and accountability.

The Collapse and Rescue

According to police officials, around a dozen devotees were trapped under the debris when the roof gave way amid heavy rains on Friday afternoon.

Emergency teams from Delhi Police, Fire Services, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rushed to the site following a distress call. A total of 12 people were rescued and immediately taken to nearby hospitals.

  • Nine victims were admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre – including three men, five women, and a four-year-old boy.
  • One male patient was taken to LNJP Hospital.
  • One female patient was admitted to RML Hospital.
  • One woman managed to escape unhurt and did not require hospitalization.

Tragically, despite the swift rescue operation, six of the injured – three men and three women – succumbed to their injuries.

Speaking to reporters, DCP (Southeast) confirmed that the deceased included a 79-year-old man, a 35-year-old man, and three women aged 42, 40, and 40 years. The incident, he added, occurred while devotees were gathered inside the room for Friday prayers.

A Disaster Waiting to Happen?

While authorities attributed the immediate cause of the collapse to heavy rainfall, the larger and more pressing question remains unanswered:

What were the custodians and committee members of the dargah doing, knowing fully well about the pitiable condition of the structure?

Why were devotees allowed to sit inside a weakened building without proper safety checks?

Did the management ever conduct routine inspections, especially during the monsoon season, when old structures face heightened risk of damage?

Shouldn’t heritage-linked religious sites, which draw hundreds of visitors daily, be subject to stricter safety norms and regular audits?

These questions are not just rhetorical; they go to the heart of a recurring pattern of criminal neglect where maintenance is ignored until tragedy strikes.

The Pattern of Neglect

The Dargah Sharif Patte Shah is situated in one of Delhi’s most visited and sensitive zones, adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Humayun’s Tomb. While the area sees both domestic and international visitors, the structural upkeep of smaller adjoining shrines often remains overlooked.

Experts point out that religious committees and custodians, often embroiled in internal disputes or financial mismanagement, fail to prioritize safety. The result: dilapidated walls, cracked roofs, and unchecked seepage that weakens the foundation of such structures.

If the roof’s poor state was already evident, then allowing devotees to gather beneath it was nothing short of reckless endangerment.

Time for Accountability, Not Sympathy Alone

The incident is yet another wake-up call for both religious custodians and government authorities. While condolences will pour in and compensation may be announced, the real accountability lies in ensuring such tragedies do not repeat.

The Delhi Police has confirmed the rescue operation is now complete, but an investigation into the structural negligence and custodial responsibilities must follow. Families who lost loved ones in this avoidable disaster deserve answers.

The Way Forward

  • Religious site management committees must be mandated to carry out regular structural safety audits.
  • Government agencies like ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) and local civic bodies must intervene when public safety is at stake.
  • Heritage-adjacent sites must be catalogued and periodically inspected, especially in monsoon seasons.
  • Most importantly, custodians must be held legally accountable for failing to maintain structures under their care.

A tragedy that could have been prevented has instead cost six precious lives. The questions remain: Will this be treated as just another accident, or will authorities finally hold those responsible for neglect accountable?
