Delhi Govt Clears Long-Pending Cases: New Policy to Ensure Jobs for Families of 1984 Riot Victims

The Delhi government has unveiled a significant and long-awaited policy aimed at providing compassionate-ground employment to the families of those who lost their lives in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The announcement came through an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office on Thursday, marking what officials described as a “decisive step toward long-delayed justice”.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta briefed that the decision, approved in the recent Cabinet meeting, finally resolves numerous employment assistance cases that have remained pending since a Cabinet resolution passed in 2007.

Many eligible dependents had been left waiting for years due to bureaucratic hurdles, incomplete documentation, or procedural ambiguity.

The new policy, she said, is designed to remove these bottlenecks and deliver long-overdue relief.

A key feature of the revised framework is its inclusivity for ageing dependents.

Recognising that many surviving family members are now above 50 and unable to take up government service due to health and age-related constraints, the government has allowed them to nominate a younger family member instead.

Eligible nominees include sons, daughters, daughters-in-law, and sons-in-law, ensuring that the benefit extends to the next generation and the intent of the original scheme is fulfilled.

Officials further added that district-level committees will now be responsible for verifying claims in a time-bound manner to avoid delays.

The government is also setting up a dedicated grievance redressal cell to fast-track any pending cases, especially those stuck due to missing records from the 1980s.

The policy is expected to bring closure and support to hundreds of affected families who have been waiting for recognition and assistance for nearly four decades.

The Delhi government has reiterated its commitment to “healing historic wounds” and ensuring that no family eligible for assistance remains unheard.
