Delhi Mirrors ‘Bulldozer Justice’ Model After Holi Murder; Houses of Accused Partially Demolished

In a move reminiscent of the controversial bulldozer actions often associated with Uttar Pradesh, authorities in Delhi carried out demolition operations against structures linked to individuals accused of the killing of 26-year-old Tarun Kumar, four days after the violent incident that allegedly stemmed from a dispute over a Holi water balloon.

Early Sunday morning, civic officials, accompanied by the Delhi Police, arrived at the densely populated JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar locality, with heavy machinery.

(Tarun was killed mercilessly by members of one Community over a petty issue during Holi.)

Video footage from the area showed a crane tearing down sections of a three-storey residential building said to belong to one of the suspects implicated in the murder case.

After the initial demolition, labourers equipped with sledgehammers were seen dismantling additional portions of the structure.

To prevent any disturbance during the operation, a substantial security presence was deployed across the neighbourhood.

Personnel from the Rapid Action Force, along with local police units, maintained a tight vigil as the demolition proceeded.

A senior officer stated that the police were assisting municipal authorities in removing what officials described as “unauthorised construction” in the area.

The action came days after the fatal assault that triggered outrage among residents.

So far, investigators have detained six adults and taken one minor into custody in connection with Tarun Kumar’s death.

The accused have also been charged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after allegations surfaced that caste-based insults were hurled during the attack.

Those arrested have been identified as Umardeen (49), Jummadeen (36), Kamruddin (36), Mustaque (46), Muzzaffar (25), and Tahir (18), all residents of the A-Block section of the JJ Colony.

Police said the chain of events began on March 4 when Tarun’s 11-year-old cousin was playing with water balloons on the terrace of their house as part of Holi festivities.

One of the balloons reportedly slipped from her hand and burst on the ground below, splashing water onto a woman passing by.

What began as a verbal altercation between the two families soon escalated dramatically.

According to investigators, the confrontation spiralled into a violent clash in which Tarun was allegedly attacked outside his residence using sticks, iron rods, cricket bats and stone slabs.

He was rushed to a hospital, but doctors later declared him dead.

The killing quickly inflamed tensions in the neighbourhood. In the days following the incident, relatives of the accused reportedly vacated their homes and secured the premises with locks.

The situation further deteriorated on Friday night when unidentified individuals allegedly set several vehicles ablaze outside the residences of the suspects.

Police officials confirmed that a separate inquiry is underway to determine who was responsible for the arson.

Authorities have continued to maintain heightened security in the locality to prevent further unrest as investigations into the murder proceed.
