Delhi Property Dealer Gunned Down in Chhawla; Gangster Kapil Sangwan’s Extortion Threats Under Scanner

New Delhi — A 42-year-old real estate broker was fatally shot by unidentified assailants riding a scooter in the Chhawla locality of Dwarka district on Friday, police officials confirmed.

According to sources within the police, preliminary findings suggest the victim had allegedly been receiving intimidation calls linked to an extortion demand from gangster Kapil Sangwan, also known as Nandu, who is reportedly hiding in the United Kingdom.

The deceased, Balwan Gehlot, was travelling alone in his car when the attackers allegedly began pursuing him. Investigators believe Gehlot attempted to steer his vehicle onto a narrow track passing through nearby farmland in an effort to escape.

However, the assailants reportedly continued their pursuit and fired multiple rounds at him.

After carrying out the shooting, the suspects fled the scene. Upon receiving information about the incident, personnel from Chhawla Police Station rushed to the location.

Teams from the crime and forensic units also inspected the site and gathered evidence. Gehlot was transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Police have registered a murder case and launched an investigation into the killing.

A senior police official said Gehlot lived with his family in Chhawla and was engaged in property dealing as his profession.

To identify the perpetrators, investigators are scanning footage from surveillance cameras installed along the route taken by the victim and the attackers.

Apart from the local police unit, the Special Staff team has also been assigned to probe the case.

Following the emergence of Sangwan’s name in the investigation, the Crime Branch has begun a parallel inquiry into the matter.

Sources in the police said Sangwan had allegedly demanded protection money from Gehlot and had issued threats earlier as well.

Investigators suspect that the killing may have been carried out after the victim refused to comply with the extortion demand, although officials say all possible motives are being examined.

Kapil Sangwan, born in 1994, is a resident of Najafgarh in Delhi. He has been linked to more than two dozen criminal cases, including allegations of extortion, illegal land possession, and murder across Delhi and neighbouring Haryana.

He was arrested in 2016 and remained behind bars until 2019, when he was granted a month-long parole.

During that time, his associates reportedly organized an extravagant gathering at a farmhouse in Najafgarh built on encroached government land.

Although the Crime Branch raided the event and detained 22 individuals, Sangwan managed to evade arrest. A Red Corner Notice was later issued against him in June 2021.

Police records also suggest that Sangwan is suspected of involvement in the February 2024 killing of Haryana INLD leader Nafe Singh Rathee, an incident believed to be connected to a rivalry between his gang and the group led by jailed gangster Manjeet Mahal.

Meanwhile, Sangwan’s elder brother Jyoti, who also faces several criminal charges, is currently lodged in a Delhi prison.
