Don 3 Dispute Escalates: Excel Entertainment Seeks ₹40 Crore from Ranveer Singh After Sudden Exit
A major rift has reportedly emerged between Farhan Akhtar’s production banner Excel Entertainment and actor Ranveer Singh, following the latter’s alleged decision to step away from Don 3 in December.
The production house is said to have demanded ₹40 crore as compensation, citing heavy financial setbacks caused by the actor’s withdrawal from the project.
As per industry reports, Excel Entertainment claims it suffered substantial losses due to development expenses already incurred, along with disruptions to planning, scheduling, and other preparatory work.
A communication accessed by Variety India reportedly mentions that the situation forced the production to downsize, with several departments being let go, and heads of departments advised to seek alternative work.
Based on these developments, the makers believe Ranveer Singh should be held financially accountable for the damage caused to the project.
Sources suggest that Ranveer exited the film due to dissatisfaction with the script. He allegedly sought multiple revisions and was unhappy even with the final version.
Excel Entertainment, however, maintains that pre-production began only after the actor had approved the script and given his consent to move forward.
The standoff reportedly led to a two-hour meeting between Ranveer Singh and the production house on Friday, but discussions failed to result in a settlement.
Both sides are said to have disagreed over responsibility and monetary liability, leaving the matter unresolved.
With tensions rising, the Producers Guild of India has now stepped in, attempting to mediate between the two parties and prevent the dispute from turning into a larger legal or industry confrontation.
The controversy has triggered intense debate online, particularly on Reddit, where a large section of users appears to support Ranveer Singh. Many questioned the legal strength of Excel’s claim, pointing out that without a written agreement, the case may not hold.
Others argued that even if the actor received a signing amount, returning that — after accounting for time spent on the teaser — should be sufficient, especially since filming had not yet begun.
Several users also expressed skepticism over the scale of the alleged losses. They noted that while pre-production does involve costs such as script development, casting discussions, location recce, budgeting, and design work, a figure as high as ₹40 crore at this stage seemed unusually steep.
Some commenters went further, accusing Excel Entertainment of attempting to pressure the actor.
They suggested the production house, which has seen mixed box office results in recent years, may be shifting blame onto Ranveer Singh after Don 3 faced repeated delays, possibly to recover losses or push him back into the project.
Earlier reports had indicated that Don 3 was effectively stalled after the makers struggled to find a replacement for Ranveer Singh.
The film was officially announced in 2023 by Farhan Akhtar with a teaser featuring the actor, but progress never moved beyond that point.
At present, neither Ranveer Singh nor Excel Entertainment has released an official statement addressing the controversy.
