Prayagraj: With online frauds getting smarter and faster, the Prayagraj Police have issued a stark warning to senior citizens: stay alert, verify before you trust, and never share sensitive details.

Speaking at an awareness seminar hosted by the Senior Citizen Council at a hotel in Civil Lines, Police Commissioner Joginder Kumar explained how scammers weaponize panic, fake rewards, and phishing links to steal money and identities.

He urged participants to treat unsolicited calls, QR codes, links, and “verification” requests with extreme caution.

A single click on a suspicious link or sharing an OTP can drain your account. Never reveal your ATM PIN, passwords, or Aadhaar details to anyone on calls, messages, or unknown websites,” Commissioner Joginder Kumar cautioned, citing recent city cases.

The session covered practical self-defense online:

  • Verify unknown callers and hang up on those asking for OTPs, UPI approvals, or remote-access apps.
  • Do not click on links in unexpected emails/SMS/WhatsApp; type official addresses yourself.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication on banking and payment apps.
  • Block and report fraud attempts on the National Cybercrime Portal (cybercrime.gov.in).

Council members said the drive is part of a larger push to empower seniors with digital confidence. A Q&A followed, where officers addressed real-life scam attempts faced by attendees and outlined quick reporting steps to help police act faster.

The takeaway: awareness is your first firewall—and it starts with a pause before you click.
