Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency has been postponed. The film has not yet been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Although, certainly, the film won’t hit the screens this week (6th September), it is not clear when the film will now make it to the cinemas. In other words, a new release date has not been finalized. The film may now be released in October post the elections in Haryana.
The film, produced and directed by Kangana, has been in the eye of controversy ever since its teaser and trailer have been released. Outfits representing the Sikh community in Madhya Pradesh have filed a petition before the high court, seeking a ban on its release.
It is learnt from reliable sources that the Sikhs have demanded that the filmmaker not show that the erstwhile Prime Minister was killed by a Sikh bodyguard.
Meanwhile, the Delhi unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal has sent the CBFC a legal notice, requesting that the film’s release be halted over concerns about its portrayal of Sikhs. The trailer also provoked strong reactions from Sikh organizations, including the Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
