A complaint by a third-year student of the English Department at Jadavpur University over an alleged hijab check during a semester examination on December 23 has triggered a wider debate on the balance between examination security and individual sensitivities.

According to the student’s complaint submitted to university authorities on the same day, an invigilator asked her, midway through the examination, to partially remove her hijab to verify whether she was wearing headphones.

The student further alleged that the invigilator asked personal and, in her view, irrelevant questions about her choice of wearing a hijab, including whether she wore it throughout the year and whether it was by personal choice.

University sources confirmed that the student was subsequently taken to a separate room, where she was examined in the presence of the Head of the Department and a woman research scholar. No electronic device was recovered during the check.

On the same day, students of the English Department wrote to Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, alleging that the student had been singled out because of her hijab and was asked to unpin it inside the examination hall in the presence of other students.

The Vice-Chancellor described the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and said a fact-finding committee would be constituted once the university reopened after the holidays to establish the sequence of events.

University’s Position: Checks Based on Suspicion, Not Identity

University officials, however, maintained that the checks were part of heightened vigilance during examinations, especially in view of recent cheating cases involving electronic devices.

According to an official, at least four students had been caught this semester using headphones during exams, none of whom belonged to any minority community.

On the same day as the alleged incident, another student wearing a hoodie was reportedly caught cheating by research scholars on invigilation duty.

Officials stressed that invigilators acted only when students appeared to behave suspiciously. “Another student wearing a hijab was not checked, and a physically disabled student wearing a hijab was taking the exam in the library and was also not checked,” an official said, underscoring that the action was not targeted at religious attire.

A Question of Examination Sanctity

Several educationists have weighed in, arguing that examinations today require strict security protocols, given the increasing use of concealed electronic gadgets by students.

They point out that it is difficult to understand why a routine security check—especially one conducted in the presence of a female faculty member and away from public view—should escalate into a major controversy.

An examination hall, they argue, is not a public space but a controlled academic environment where maintaining integrity and fairness is paramount.

“If such checks were conducted in an open or inappropriate setting, it would certainly send the wrong signal,” said one senior teacher. “But when checks are done discreetly and respectfully, they should be seen as part of preserving the sanctity of the examination.”

Another academic added that the student, being aware of the heightened alert over electronic cheating, could have voluntarily cooperated with the check to remove any doubt. “There was no apparent attempt to undermine her dignity or self-respect.

On the contrary, cooperation would have reinforced trust in the examination process,” the teacher said.

Political and Student Reactions

Meanwhile, the Jadavpur Trinamool Chhatra Parishad submitted a representation to the Vice-Chancellor demanding an investigation, invoking constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and warning against any form of perceived humiliation linked to clothing choices.

The organisation extended solidarity to the student and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding a secular academic environment.

A Larger Debate

The incident has once again highlighted how quickly routine administrative actions can acquire communal overtones.

Educationists caution against “making a mountain out of a molehill,” arguing that not every security measure should be viewed through a religious or political lens.

They insist that the focus must remain on academic integrity, equal treatment, and the smooth conduct of examinations—values that ultimately protect the interests of all students.

The fact-finding committee’s report is expected to clarify whether protocol was followed and whether any lines were crossed. Until then, the episode continues to fuel a broader discussion on balancing sensitivity with responsibility in India’s university spaces.
