In a deeply unsettling development, the tragic death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg has taken a dark turn. Initially reported as an accidental drowning during a yacht outing in Singapore on September 19, 2025, new revelations have emerged suggesting foul play.
Bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami has alleged that Garg was poisoned by his manager, Siddharth Sharma, and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta.
According to Goswami’s statement, Sharma dismissed Garg’s symptoms, including frothing at the mouth, as mere acid reflux and allegedly delayed seeking medical help.
Furthermore, Sharma reportedly shouted “Jabo de, jabo de” (let him go) as Garg struggled in the water, raising suspicions about the intent behind the incident.
The Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested Sharma, Mahanta, Goswami, and co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta in connection with the case.
The SIT’s remand note indicates that the accused may have orchestrated a conspiracy to portray Garg’s death as accidental, selecting a foreign venue to conceal their actions.
Material evidence, including financial transactions and witness statements, has been gathered to support these allegations.
In response to the gravity of the situation, the Assam government has activated the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.
A judicial commission, led by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, has been established to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death.
The commission aims to address the concerns of the public and provide clarity on the matter.
The controversy surrounding this case has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the integrity of those involved and demanding justice for the beloved artist.
As investigations continue, the public awaits answers to the unsettling questions surrounding Zubeen Garg’s untimely demise.
