PRAYAGRAJ: In a horrifying incident that has shaken the people of Prayagraj, a father killed his one-and-a-half-year-old son in a fit of drunken rage.

The tragedy occurred in Mohiuddinpur Bharetha village of the Pooramufti area. The accused, identified as Shani, a daily wage laborer, was arrested on Monday and later sent to jail.

According to police, the shocking crime stemmed from domestic resentment against his wife. The mother, Kiran, complained to the police, leading to Shani’s arrest. Postmortem examination could not conclusively determine the cause of death, so the child’s viscera have been preserved for forensic analysis.

The Crime Unfolds

On Sunday evening, under the influence of alcohol, Shani stuffed a cloth into the mouth of his 18-month-old son, Gullu, suffocating him to death.

What makes the tragedy even more haunting is that the act was witnessed by his four-year-old daughter, Paro.

Even in his drunken stupor, Shani did not attempt to hide his crime. Instead, he confessed to his family members about what he had done.

The news spread through the household, plunging the entire family into grief and disbelief.

Kiran, devastated by the loss of her child, immediately went to the local police station with her relatives and filed a murder complaint against her husband.

Police registered a case, took Shani into custody, and proceeded with legal action.

On Monday, after the postmortem examination, the grieving family performed the final rites of the child.

Family’s Reaction

At the postmortem house, Shani’s younger brother, Deva, revealed that Shani often quarreled with his wife under the influence of alcohol. He had even issued repeated threats in the past that he would kill his son, but nobody in the family imagined that he would actually follow through on such a monstrous act.

The Psychology of Filicide

The killing of a child by a parent, known as filicide, is one of the most disturbing crimes in human psychology. Often fueled by factors such as substance abuse, extreme anger, domestic disputes, or deep-seated frustration, such acts reflect a total breakdown of empathy and parental instinct.

In this case, Shani’s dependence on alcohol appears to have clouded his judgment and magnified his anger towards his wife, ultimately turning his innocent son into a victim of misplaced rage. The tragic irony is that the child—barely old enough to comprehend the world around him—had his life stolen before he could even speak his own name.

Psychologists note that such cases highlight the dangerous intersection of addiction, domestic violence, and mental instability. What should have been the safest bond in the world—the bond between a father and his child—was transformed into the very source of terror and death.

Separate Case: Retired Armyman’s murder still unsolved

Meanwhile, Prayagraj is also reeling from another case of brutal violence. Two days after the killing of Aman Singh, a 60-year-old retired Army man, the motive and identity of his killers remain a mystery.

Singh, a resident of Kasari Masari Chakia, had gone to oversee boring work at his plot near Mohini crossing under the Airport police station area on the morning of September 27. He was attacked inside an under-construction house and killed.

His son, Pankaj, lodged an FIR, prompting a police investigation. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dhumanganj, Ajendra Yadav, stated that the case is being examined from every possible angle. The police have assured the family that the case will be solved within a week and the culprits brought to justice.

Both incidents—one involving a helpless toddler killed by his own father, and another involving the mysterious murder of a retired soldier—underscore the rising tide of violence in domestic and community spaces. One case reveals the dangerous consequences of alcoholism and family discord, while the other exposes gaps in public security that allow such attacks to occur.

In both situations, innocent lives have been cut short, leaving behind families scarred forever.
