Former Corporator Nizamuddin Arrested in Prayagraj for Offensive Social Media Post Against Religious Guru
Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh — A former corporator, Nizamuddin, has landed in legal trouble after being arrested for posting an offensive remark on social media targeting a religious guru.
The arrest has stirred local discussions on the growing misuse of social media, religious sensitivity, and the accountability of public representatives.
The Incident
The controversy began after a religious event was recently held in Pattharwali Gali, where the religious guru in question was seen receiving reverence from devotees, many of whom touched his feet.
According to police, Nizamuddin allegedly recorded a video of this occasion and uploaded it to his social media account with derogatory and objectionable comments.
The post quickly drew widespread anger. Several members of the public, feeling that the remarks insulted not only the guru but also the religious sentiments of his followers, lodged complaints at the Shahganj police station.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Taking swift action, the Shahganj police arrested Nizamuddin late on Tuesday night. He was presented before the court the following day and has now been placed under a two-day police custody remand for further investigation.
Although the controversial video was reportedly deleted after the complaint was filed, authorities have clarified that deletion does not nullify the offense.
Shahganj Station House Officer (SHO) Kapil Kumar confirmed that a formal case has been registered against him under relevant provisions of law about religious sensitivity and misuse of social platforms.
Alleged Links to Atiq Ahmad
Beyond the immediate controversy, questions are also being raised about Nizamuddin’s past associations. As per reliable sources, he allegedly had close ties with slain mafia don Atiq Ahmad, who was once a dominant force in Prayagraj’s underworld and political corridors.
Insiders at the Nagar Nigam revealed that Nizamuddin had been carrying out various works in municipal and related government offices, often leveraging his alleged backing from Atiq Ahmad.
His influence in these institutions, sources say, was disproportionately high for a former corporator and was believed to stem from his proximity to the gangster’s network. Several well-meaning corporators had distanced themselves from Nizamuddin because of his links with mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf.
Community Reactions
The arrest has left the community divided. While many welcomed the police action, saying it was necessary to curb offensive speech against religious leaders, others expressed concern about the increasing criminalization of online expression.
Citizens in Shahganj and adjoining areas are keenly watching the developments, with some demanding stricter scrutiny of individuals who misuse their political clout for personal or unlawful gains.
For Prayagraj, this case is yet another reminder of the delicate balance between freedom of speech, religious respect, and law enforcement, as well as the lingering shadow of mafia-politics that continues to influence civic life.
