Former US Colonel Urges Washington to Seek Diplomacy, Suggests PM Modi Could Help Mediate Israel–Iran Conflict

A retired senior officer of the United States military has cautioned that prolonged American participation in the escalating confrontation between Israel and Iran could trigger serious economic turmoil worldwide, while proposing that India’s Prime Minister could serve as a credible intermediary to help de-escalate the crisis.

In a conversation with American media personality Tucker Carlson, former US Army colonel Douglas MacGregor discussed the possible repercussions of Washington becoming deeply entangled in the conflict.

During the interview, which has circulated widely on social media platforms, Carlson asked Macgregor how the United States might extricate itself from what he described as a growing war involving Iran.

MacGregor suggested that diplomacy led by a respected international figure could offer a path toward reducing tensions.

In that context, he mentioned Narendra Modi as a potential mediator who could help facilitate dialogue among the rival parties.

Explaining his reasoning, Macgregor noted that India maintains constructive relations with multiple countries involved in the broader geopolitical equation.

He pointed out that Modi has maintained productive engagement with Israel while also sustaining working ties with Iran and maintaining functional relations with China.

According to Macgregor, India’s diplomatic posture and expanding global influence make it a suitable candidate to help bridge divides. He remarked that

India is historically aligned with a policy of strategic neutrality and is emerging as a significant power with growing economic and geopolitical weight.

In his view, the United States should acknowledge this influence and view India as a partner in resolving crises rather than as a strategic complication.

MacGregor further argued that the US leadership should consider reaching out to the Indian prime minister in an effort to pursue negotiations aimed at ending the hostilities.

The retired colonel also warned that intensifying warfare could severely disrupt the global economy, particularly energy markets.

He cautioned that if the conflict continues to escalate, crude oil prices could surge dramatically, potentially reaching levels as high as $300 per barrel. Such a spike, he suggested, could trigger widespread instability in financial markets.

Macgregor predicted that global equity markets could experience a massive downturn if the conflict spirals out of control, estimating that stock values might plunge by as much as 60 to 80 percent.

The resulting losses, he said, could erase trillions of dollars in wealth and inflict long-lasting economic damage across multiple economies.

He further stressed that the current geopolitical environment carries numerous potential flashpoints. According to him, policymakers appear to be ignoring the risks associated with a rapidly escalating confrontation.

He warned that several worst-case scenarios could emerge if tensions continue to rise.

During the exchange, MacGregor also referred to the responsibilities of the American president when dealing with international crises. Mentioning Donald Trump, he argued that US leadership must carefully evaluate how foreign policy decisions affect citizens at home.

MacGregor emphasized that the president’s foremost duty is to safeguard the interests of the American public rather than prioritizing the strategic goals of other countries.

He added that policymakers should consider the economic and social consequences that prolonged conflict could impose on ordinary Americans.

Observers note that with global energy supplies, trade routes, and financial markets potentially at risk, international diplomatic efforts may play a crucial role in preventing the conflict from expanding further.
